It is an object of the present invention to provide an amusement device in the form of a pull toy that resembles a flying saucer and which may be pulled along any surface by means of an associated pull string.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a pull toy in the form of a flying saucer that may be constructed entirely of molded plastic material so as to produce the smooth and uninterrupted exterior surfaces and shape of the type attributed to flying saucers and other mystery space ships.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a flying saucer pull toy of the above type which may be used for display and demonstration purposes to produce a realistic simulated flying saucer in flight.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a flying saucer pull toy bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a flying saucer pull toy made in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view of the toy shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the toy shown in Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is an exploded bottom plan view of the device shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a schematic diagram illustrating the manner in which the toy is supported in simulated flight position.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, and more particularly to Figures 1 to 4 thereof, a flying saucer pull toy made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a main body portion 12 which is constructed from a hollow plastic shell having a coating of silver paint on the interior surface thereof. The bottom portion of the main body is provided with a plurality of downwardly opening sockets 14 which simulate the landing gear and rollably receive ball members 16. These ball members are preferably spherical steel, glass, or plastic members that will rotate freely within the supporting sockets. The arrangement of the landing gear is such that a pair of laterally spaced apart balls 16 are rotatably supported adjacent to the front end member 19, while the single centrally located ball 16 is supported adjacent to the rear member 20.
As is more clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawing, the main body portion is provided with a front arcuate cut out 17 for accommodating the arcuate front end member 19, and a rear arcuate cut out 21 for accommodating the U-shaped rear member 20 in flush engagement with the center of the body. Both the front and rear ends 19, 20 are preferably constructed from reddaylight fluorescent material so as to contrast with the main body member and thus produce a highly attractive and decorative appearance.
In use, a pull string 23 is secured within the opening 22 in the front arcuate member 19, whereupon the device may be pulled along any desired surface upon the landing gear.
If desired, a separate pull string 23 may be secured to both the front and the rear members so that the toy can be pulled from opposite directions so as to provide a reciprocating movement either for simple amusement purposes or to produce a simulated flight on a stage or other demonstration platform. With reference now to Figure 5 of the drawing, an arrangement 25 is shown wherein the separate strings 27, 28 secured to the front and back of the flying saucer device 10 are attached at opposite ends to separate poles 29, 30 that can be manipulated so as to either pull the toy back and forth in a reciprocating fashion or to raise the toy above a fixed level by merely exerting a pull upon both poles to thus raise the toy above its supporting surface. If desired, a third string can be attached to one side of the toy and a pull exerted in a lateral direction when it has been raised above its supporting surface, to thus simulate a true flight of the saucer over an extended area, such as upon a theatre stage. In this way, the toy can virtually be made to float outwardly from the stage and over the top of the audience. By using dark thin thread, such string can be made virtually invisible so as to produce a very realistic effect.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A device for producing a simulated flight of a flying saucer toy comprising, in combination, a pair of manually operable handles, a hollow substantially egg-shaped flying saucer toy made wholly of plastic material intermediate the handles, flexible pull strings interconnecting the ends of said flying saucer toy and the upper ends of said handles adapted, upon drawing the handles away from the toy to raise said toy above a fixed level, and further upon moving said handles as a unit in a reciprocating fashion to simulate a true flight of said toy, said hollow saucer toy consisting of a main body portion of saucer-shaped configuration with imperforated convex upper external surface and concave lower internal surface and depending side and end walls, said main body portion having at its forward end an arcuate recessed portion and at its rear end a U-shaped recessed portion, an attachable and removable reentrant arcuate end member in flush engagement and having a close fit with said forward arcuate recessed portion, an attachable and removable reentrant U-shaped member in flush engagement and having a close fit with said rear U-shaped recessed portion, said reentrant members having closed external convex end walls, a three-point landing gear carried upon the lower concave surface of said main body portion, said landing gear comprising three sockets with a spherical plastic ball supported in each of said sockets and extending downwardly and outwardly therefrom, a pair of said sockets spaced transversely apart and adjacent to said arcuate recessed portion at the forward end of said main body portion and a single socket adjacent to said U-shaped recess portion at the rear of said main body portion, whereby said toy can elfect a perfect landing while still in motion before stopping.
