An object of the present invention -is to provide `a toy in the form of a dog which sits up 'on its hind legs and returns to squatting posi-k tion periodically.

The slotted plate 5I is formed with the bifurcated slot 59 which comprises an upper portion 69 above its forward half portion 6I. The upper portion 60 and the forward half portion El of the slot 59 are separated by a finger 62. A trigger l63 is mounted by a pivot B4 on the slotted plate 5I and comprises a lower arm 65 and a forward arm 66, the latter being formed with a noserB'I.
A trigger bar 68 extends laterally of platform I2 between the apron members I'I, parallel to axles I4 and i6 and somewhat to the rear of front axle I4.
A coil spring -69 is anchored to platform I2 as at 79, and to the lower forward portion of torso portion 23.
The operation of the toy is as follows:
With the dog body 22 in squatting position, that is, with torso 23 almost horizontal as illustrated particularly in Figs. l and 8, the wheels I3 and I5 are caused to revolve by pulling the toy.
Ilhe revolution of cam 45 and the movements of follower plate 49, will have no effect on the dog body 22 in the relation of parts shown in Fig. 8.
As wheels I5 revolve so that studs 2l are in a forward position, the links '2D actuate drive bar I 9 forwardly and the latter enters the upper portion 60 of slot 59, since the slotted plate 5I, being pivoted at its rear end on pivot 52, will assume the lowest position possible relative to the drive bar I9.
In the forward travel of drive bar I9, the slotted plate 5I is lifted from the downward slanting position of Fig. 8 to the position of Fig. 7, in which its body portion 56 is substantially horizontal Y' and further driven forward by the forward drive of drive bar i9. At the end of the forward travel of the drive bar I9 and the slotted plate 5I, the nose 61 of trigger 59 has caught on the trigger bar l68. In the course of the forward travel of slot plate 5I, it has pulled pivot 52 forwardly around pivot 25, causing the dog body 22 to assume the substantially erect position of Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. The relation of parts is, at that moment, as shown in Fig. 7, drive bar I9 being in the full line position,
As wheels I5 continue to revolve, links 20 pull drive bar I9 backwards and it travels substantially to the rear of slot 59 dropping into the main portion thereof as soon as it is deprived of the support of the finger 62.
The slotted plate 5l is prevented from returning backward by the engagement of trigger nose 61 with trigger bar 5B.
As each tooth 46 engages cam follower 48, the follower plate 119 is raised around its pivot and causes rod 3d to rise. The rising `of rod 3i) causes the tail 39 to wag about its pivot and causes the leg portions to swing around their pivot 36 in a simulation of the dog begging.
Lip 34 of rod 30 further raises the rear portion 29 of jaw portion 2l, causing the latter to drop thereby loading spring 28. When a tooth has passed the follower `llt, the latter will dro-p into the space between teeth 46 permitting the follower plate 49 to drop, whereupon rod 3G will drop actuated by spring 28 which tends to close jaw portion 21 and which, acting across pivot 26a and rear portion 29, forces rod 32 downward. 'Ilhis causes an opposite motion of leg portion 35.
Lip 4l, acting on the portion 40 of the tail 39,
depresses the portion 40 raising the tail 39. The jaw portion 27, leg portions 35 and the tail 39 are thus caused to reciprocate by reason of the rising and falling of the cam follower 48 as the cam `155 revolves. Such rising and falling takes place approximately between the time when the stud 2| is in its lowermost position and the time it reaches its uppermost position in its second revolution, and while the dog body 22 is erect.
As the drive bar I9 travels forward from its rearmost to its foremost position in this second cycle, it will by gravity stay in the main forward half portion 6I of slot 59 and engage the lower arm 65 of trigger 93 as shown in bro-ken lines in Fig. 7. This will raise the forward arm portion 56 clear of the trigger bar 68 and free the weighted dog body 22 which, augmented by the pull of spring `69, will fall forward and in so doing pull slotted plate `5I rearwardly to the position of Fig. 8, at which time the operation will recommence.
It is thus evident that in the first cycle, corresponding to a revolution of rear wheel I5, dog body 22 is raised from a squatting to a sitting position and in the second cy-cle, corresponding to and measured by a second revolution of rear wheels I5, the toy simulates the actions of a dog opening its mouth, begging with its front paws and wagging its tail while in a sitting up or substantially erect position.
It is to be understood that the animated ligure may be in the form of a dog o-r any other animal, bird, etc.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thusl described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a pull toy, in combination with a platform and wheels mounted on said platform, standards mounted on said platform, a simulated animal body pivotally mounted between said standards, a drive bar driven from said wheels, means connecting said drive bar to said body for raising said body from a substantially horizontal to a substantially vertical position, and a releasable means for holding said body in its vertical position.
2. In a pull toy, in combination with a platform, an axle and two wheels mounted on opposite ends of said axle and xed against rotation relative thereto, standards mounted on said platform, a simulated animal body pivotally mounted in said standards, links connected to said wheels, a drive bar connected to said links, means connecting said drive bar and to said body for raising said body from a substantially horizontal to a substantially vertical position upon revolution of said wheels, and a releasable means controlled by movement of said drive bar for holding said body in its vertical position.
3. In a pull toy, in combination with a platform, an axle and two wheels mounted on opposite ends of said axle and xed against rotation relative thereto, standards mounted on said platform, a simulated animal body transversely plvotally mounted in said standards, said body comprising movable members and a rod engaging said members and slidable longitudinally of said body, links pivotally connected at one end to said wheels,A
a transverse drive for connecting the other ends of said links, a plate pivotally connected to said body and formed with a longitudinally extending slot, said slot comprising an upper portion, said plate further comprising a finger portion separating the forward portion of said upper portion from the lower portion of said slot, said drive extending through said slot, a trigger bar mounted laterally on said platform and a trigger pivotally mounted on said plate, said plate upon a revolution of said wheels to the forward position of said drive bar rotating said body about its pivot and raising it from a substantially horizontal to a substantially vertical position and engaging said trigger on said trigger bar to prevent subsequent rearward motion of said plate during the rearwardly driving portion of said revolution, said drive bar being upon the succeeding revolution of said wheels engaging said trigger to disengage the same from said trigger bar and allow the body to return yto its horizontal position, and cam means mounted on said axle and adapted to slidingly actuate said rod to move said members while said trigger is engaged on said trigger bar.
4. In a pull toy, in combination with a platform, an axle and two wheels mounted on opposite ends oi said axle and xed against rotation relative thereto, standards mounted on said platform, a simulated animal body transversely pivotally mounted in said standards, links pivotally 3 connected at one end to said wheels, a transverse bar drive bar connecting the other ends of said links, a plate pivotally connected to said body and formed with a longitudinally extending slot, said slot comprising an upper portion, said plate further comprising a nger portion separating the forward portion of said upper portion from the lower portion of said slot, said drive bar extendi ing through said slot, a trigger bar mounted laterally on said platform and a trigger pivotally mounted onsaid plate, said plate upon a revolution of said Wheels to the forward position of said drive bar rotating said body about its pivot and raising it from a substantially horizontal to a substantially vertical position and engaging said trigger on said trigger bar to prevent subsequent rearward motion of said plate during the rearwardly driving portion of said revolution, said drive bar being upon the succeeding revolution of said wheels engaging said trigger to disengage the same from said trigger bar and allow the body to return to its horizontal position.
