P. DE. LEMME MECHANICAL TOY GREYHOUND Filed Oct, 20. 1926 INVENTOR.
PHILIP DE LEMME Patented Oct. 25, 1927.
PHILIP DE LEMME, F JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
MncnANIoAL TOY GREYHOUND.
Application filed. October 20, 1926. Serial No. 143,011.
The invention relates to a wheeled toy of the type which is designed to simulate an animal in action, and the invention speclfically relates to such a toy designed to represent a whippet or similar type of greyhound while in running action.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simplified form of toy which can be manufactured to sell at low cost and which when drawn along the ground will simulate the buckling action of a greyhound while running at high speed.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and in part will be more fully set forth in the following particular description'of one form of device embodying my invention, and the invention also consists in certain new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 is a view in full lines and in side elevation of a preferred embodiment of the invention with the showing distended to take the full stride and in dotted lines showing the position of the figure in its fully buckled position; and
Fig. 2 is a plan view looking down upon the showing in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing there is dis closed a figure which is made up largely from flat boards cut to shape and suitably painted to represent a whippet or similar type of greyhound. There is disclosed a body of two hingedly connected parts, a front portion 11 and a rear portion 12. To the front portion 11 is secured a pair of transversely positioned front legs 13 and similarly the rear portion 12 is provided with a pair of rear legs 14. The front pair of legs are supported from a pair of front wheels 15 and similarly the pair of rear legs 14 are supported from a pair of rear wheels 16 carried by a wire axle 17 passed through the legs as shown in Fig. 2. The front set of wheels is supported on an axle which in cludes a conventional form of crank 18 usually found in toys of this character.
The body portions are hingedly connected across the small of the back of the animal by means of a leather strap 19 so that the two body portions have relative movement transversely across the back and the adjacent faces of each of the body portions are beveled downwardly and away from each other as shown along the lines 20 and 21 so as to permit freedom of'movement of the body portion as indicated. A reach rod extends beneath the body portion and across the joint with its upper end pivotally connected by looping the same through an eye 23 secured to the underside of the body portion adjacent the edge 20. This reach rod extends downwardly and forwardly between the front legs and is pivotally connected to the crank 18.
In operation it will be understood that as the toy is drawn along the ground, the turning wheels 15 will actuate the crank and act on the reach rod 22 to draw the body section from the full line into the dotted line construction shown in Fig. 1. This, of course, takes place periodically depending upon the speed of rotation of the wheels and as a result the toy will move from its distended into its buckling position at a rate depending upon the rate at which the toy is drawn along the ground and in this way simulate the appearance of a greyhound in running action.
rVhile I have shown and described, and have pointed out in the annexed claims, certain novel features of my invention, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a wheeled toy, a body simulating a dog of the greyhound type while running, said body being of two parts pivotally connected across the back and side plates overlapping and concealing the joint between the body portions in all relative positions of the body portions, the front portion provided with a pair of front legs and the rear portion provided with a pair of rear legs, each leg provided with a supporting wheel, a crank driven from the front wheel, and a reach rod connecting said crank with the rear body portion whereby the body portion will periodically buckle at its middle with all wheels on the ground as the toy is drawn along the ground.
2. In a wheeled toy, a body simulating a dog of the greyhound type while running, said body being of two parts pivotally connected across' the back, the front portion-19rd vided with a pair of front legs and therear portion provided with ahpair of rear legs, each leg provided with asupporting wheel,
r a crank driven from the front wheel, "and a reach rod connecting said crank with the rear body portion whereby the body portion will periodically buckle at its middle with all wheels on the ground as the toy is drawn along the ground.
.3. In a wheeled. toy, aubody including legs simulating .a running animal, said body comprising two hingedly connected parts 15 with the legs rigidly connected thereto, ft pair of legs to \BZLCh part, a pair-of ground engaging wheels for supporting each body part, and mechanism driven from the wheels of one part and connected to'the other part 20 for causingrelative movement between the PHILIP DE LEMMEQ
