Be it known that 1, IwAN HoRNAs'rAJ, a citizen of Ukraine, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Manikin rloys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to mechanical toys, having more particular reference to toys of the type in which a. manikin or other figure is mounted on a vehicle and caused to perform certain movements as the latter travels.

The invention has for a general object the provision of a novel toy of this type, and more specifically to provide a simulation of a lireman driving a nre truck.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved toy.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical section showing the operative connection between the front wheels and the manikin.

As here embodied my improved toy comprises a wagon having its body made up of a pair of side boards 10 united by a top platform 11 and a back-piece 12, this body being mounted on front and rear wheels 13 and 14 respectively. rIhe rear wheels 141 may be mounted on the ends of a suitable axle, or in any other suitable manner, while the front wheels 13 are mounted on stub axles 15 fixed in the side boards 10. A disk 30 is freely mounted inside each wheel 13 on the stub axles 15 and has a pin 31 projecting from its periphery between two pins 32 carried by the wheel and spaced about ninety degrees apart, these pins 32 projecting over the periphery of the disk to engage the pin 31 on the latter.

Extending between these disks 13, eccentrically thereof, is a rod 18 which is mounted at opposite ends in the disks adjacent their rims, the rod being rotatable with respect to the disks. Fixed at its lower end to this rod 18, midway between the wheels 13, is a. bar 19 which extends upwardly therefrom and is engaged at its upper end to a figure mounted on the platform 11, to

impart motion to said ligure as the wheels 13 rotate.

As here shown the bar 19 has a handwheel 20 on its upper end to which are pivotally connected the hands of a manikin 21 having its feet pivotally attached to the platform 11, the legs, arms and body of the manikin being all rigid, ther manikin preferably representing a fireman. The feet of the manikin may be pivotally attached to the platform 11 in any desired manner, being here shown as fastened to one leaf of a hinge 22 whose other leaf is fastened to the platform.

Connected at one end to the body of the manikin, at the back thereof, and extending downwardly and rearwardly therefrom to connect at its other end to the wagon body, is a coiled tension spring 23 which normally acts to swing said manikin backward. Mounted upon the bar 19 near the bottom thereof is a bell 25 having a free hanging clapper 26. Suitably attached to the front end of the wagon body are draft rods 27 which may be connected at their front ends to a handle box (not shown).

Then the wagon is drawn along the iioor or ground the wheels 13 rotate. As the wheel 13 rotates one pin 32 thereon engages the pin 31 on the adjacent disk 30 and moves the latter with the wheel while the bar 19 is being pulled downward during which movement of the bar the manikin is caused to swing forward; and spring 23 is tensioned. lWhen rod 18 has passed dead centre, the spring 23 acts to pull on bar 19, rapidly raising the same, the disk 30 moving ahead of the wheel 13, as will be obvious the manikin swinging backward. with a jerking motion and the clapper 26 being caused to strike against the bell 25.

lhile I have illustrated and described a. preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed, and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:

A mechanical toy comprising awagon, a movable manikin thereon, a tension spring connected at one end to said wagon and at its other end to the manikin and adapted to movel the manilm 1n one direction, a. running` Wheel, an axle on which sald Wheel 1s freely mounted, a disk also freely mountedv on said axle adjacent said Wheel, a bar connected at one end to said disk eccentrically thereof and at its opposite end to said manikin whereby during rotation of said disk said manikin is moved in an opposite direction toA that in which it is moved by the 10 said spring, a pin projecting from said disk, and a pair of arcuately spaced pins on said Wheel between which the first mentioned pin projects.
