Description

O. A. BAILEY Toy.
Patented Dec. 16, 1879.
WITNESSES ATTORNEY N. PETERS, PHQTOMTHUGMPMER. WASmNGTow n c PATENT OFFICE. I
CHARLES A. BAILEY, OF COBALT, ASSIGNOR TO HORATIO H. ABBE, EZRA G. CONE, ELIJAH G. BARTON, AND AUGUSTUS H. OONKLIN, OF EAST HAMPTON, CONNECTICUT.
IM PROVEM ENT lN TOYS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,648, dated December 16, 1879; application filed October 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I CHARLES A. BAILEY, of Cobalt, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal section of my improved toy; and Fig. 2 is a side View thereof, showing a modification thereof.
This invention has relation to the construction of toys in the form of animals-such, for instance, as fishes; and it consists in pivoting the underjaw, mounting the body on wheels connected by a crank-shaft, which is engaged by a lever-arm extending forward to the movable jaw, to work the same when the body of the toy is moved forward on its supportingwheels, as hereinafter fully shown and-dcscribed. Q
In the accompanying drawii lgs, the letter A designates the body of a fish, which may be cast of metal or otherwise formed, and is preferably hollow underneath, and provided at the sides with bearing-flanges a, through which project the ends of the crankshaft B, to which the wheels (1 are attached. These wheels form the main support of the body, there bein g usually in rear a small wheel, I), to sustain the rear part of the body, said wheel being supported on a small wire or rod, 0, extending from one of the sides of the body to the other, as shown. In front, the under jaw, D, having the teeth well marked, is pivoted in proper position to the sides of the head portion, and is provided with an arm, at, which extends longitudinally to the rear, and engages the crank e of the crank-shaft B in such relation that as the crank rises during the motion of the wheels thejaw D is depressed or opened, and closed as the crank falls. As the toy is pulled along by means of a suitable cord the mouth opens and closes in a lively manner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
The toy herein described, consisting of the hollow i body A, supporting-wheels O, and crank-shaft B, rear wheel, I), movable under jaw, D, and lever-arm d, extending from said movable jaw to the rear and engaging said crank-shaft, substantially as specified.
In testimony that 1 claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. A. BAILEY.
Witnesses: IVIARIA AGKLEY,
JOSIAH AoKLEY.
