Abstract

282,305. Colwell, W. E. Aug. 3, 1927. Mechanical toys.-The legs of a walking toy are actuated by means of cranks driven by a spring or motor operated mechanism that is provided with a speed-governing device, and with a ratchet wheel and co-operating pawl to stop the mechanism when desired. The legs 14 are connected to the body 10 of the toy by means of slots 16, 18, the former being engaged by the projecting ends of a pin 13 passing through the body, and the latter by cranks 21 geared to a spring motor 26. A shaft 34, also geared to the motor 26, carries a ratchet wheel 35 that may be engaged by a pawl 39 to stop the toy, when the arm 11 to which the pawl is connected, is moved. A rod 44, Fig. 4, carrying a brake-shoe 45 rotates with the shaft 34 and moves transversely thereof under the action of centrifugal force to press the shoe into engagement with the inner wall of a drum 42, and thus control the speed of the motor. In a modification in which the invention is applied to a four-legged toy, the front and rear legs are actuated by separate sets of cranks connected by a chain and sprocket wheels.
