To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l'eNArIos MAIsANo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented new and useful Improvements in'Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This'invention relates to a toy for the amusement of children, and more particularly to a mechanical: one representing a horse and rider which, when actuated, travels around a fixed circular undulating track, and in such travel rises and falls, such movement being attained by co-action between said fixed circular undulating track and certain feet of the horse, having means for engagement with. said track, whereby said figure mounted on a pivot is caused to rock and appear to gallop as it travels in a circular path, and at the same time may ring a bell or chime, and effect a clicking sound in imitation ofhoof beats. These amusing aims are accomplished in a simple and inexpensive manner by means hereinafter described and more especially set forth in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views of the undulating track, and Fig. 6 is a side view of a modification.
In the drawings, 10 is a base of circular or other box-like form, preferably of sheet metal, with a similar cover 11, through the center of which is an opening 12 to form the bearing for a short shaft 13. The top of the cover 11 is provided near its outer edge with a circular track 14 concentric with the opening 12 and having an undulating upper surface as shown. This surface is produced by a series of combined curved rises 15 and depressions 16. The undulating track 14 may be separate from and attached to the cover 11, or, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in tegral therewith.
Just above the cover 11 is a disk 17 of diameter less than that of the inner edge of the track 14', which disk is secured to the shaft 13 so as to rotate therewith. On the lower end of the shaft 13, and within the base 10, fixed a spur gear wheel 18 driven by a like wheel 19 fastened to a horizontal shaft 20 which extends through the side of the base 10 and is bent to form a crank 21,

Upon turning the crank 21 the disk 17 is rotated by means of the gear wheels 18 and 19, and said disk through the instrumentality of the standard 22 in turn causes the horseman to travel around the track 14, and the roller 25 running over the undulating surface of said track rocks the horseman on its pivot 28. I
The roller 25 may be and preferably is a bell having contained therein balls as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, which rings as it moves over the track and so adds to the attractiveness of the toy.
In connection with the figure, 24 is a device'for producing a clicking sound in time with the movement of the horse and suggesting hoof beats. This device consists of a box 28 from which projects a thin spring metal tongue 29 having a buckled depression 30. The free end of this tongue extends under one of the feet of the horse and is depressed by the downward movement of said foot. l/Vhen the foot rises the spring tongue returns to its normal position.
The toy may be made of sheet metal and, being of simple construction, the cost of manufacture is reduced to the minimum.
I claim 1. 'A mechanical toy comprising a boxlike base, a circular track, having an undulating upper surface, secured on the top of the base near its outer edge, a disk within said track parallel to the base top and pivoted in the center thereof, means for r0tat ing said disk, a figure of a horse and rider lating upper face,
pivotally supported by said disk above said track and having a member reaching over saidtrack, and aroller carried by the figure in forced contact With the undulating face base near its" outer edge, a disk Within said track parallel to thebase top and pivoted in the center thereof, gearing forfrotating said disk, a vertical standard secured near the oontactof the face; a
edge of the disk, a figure of a horse and rider pivotally supported on said standard'above said track and having a member reaching over said track, a rollerjournaled onsaid v figure in contact with said undulating face, 7
anda contractile springfor maintaining roller with sa d undulating 3; A mechanical toy comprising a-"box "lik base, a circular track having an'upper face-integrally formedwith the top of the base near its outer edge, a rotatable disk parallel to the base top, a shaft fixed to said disk, a gear Wheel on said shaft Within the base, a horizontal shaft extending into the base having a crank on its outer end and a gear Wheel on its inner end engaging the first named gear, a standard extending vertically fromnear the edge of said disk, a figure pivotallysupported on saidstandard above the track, a rolling bell pivoted to said figure contact with the undulating face ofthe track, a contractile spring connected to said figure and tothe disk to hold the bellupon said undulating face, a rattler orclicker attached to,saidbase, and means for giving a clicking'sound in the movement ofthehorse V In testimony whereof I affix my' signature in presence of two Witnesses.
