G. R. BEEBE FiledMa 2, 1924 aff-2Mb@ INVENTOR ATTOR N EY WITNESS:
Patented Apr. 21, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
5 GLENN R. BEEBE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WHEELED MERRY-Go-ROUND.
Application led May 2,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLENN R. BEEBF., a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of -Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wheeled Merry-Go- Rounds, of which the following is a specification. j
The object of my said invention is the provision of an extremely simple and inexpensive wheeled merry-go-round that I des` ignate a. kiddie-go-round, adapted to be operated after the manner in which two children operate kiddie cars, and calculated to 'aord amusement to children as well as to furnish a highly desirable exercising apparatus.
Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the sameare read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification z- Figure 1 is a plan view of the merry-goround constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is aside elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is an elevation showing the construction and equipment at the opposite ends of the sweep comprised in the device.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view showing the preferred manner of mounting the sweep.
S'milar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I employ a pedestal 1 on which are radial webs 2 adapted to rest on the ground with a View to preventing canting of the pedestal. At its upper end the pedestal is provided with an upright journal B. On the said journal 3 are annular washers 4 and 5 with'circular grooves in their opposed .sides forming a race for thereception and movement of anti-friction balls 6, and
superimposed above the uppermost Washer 1924. Serial No. 710,633.
stood that any other appropriate mounting may be employed without involving departure from the scope of my claimed invention.
In accordance with my invention the sweep 8 is formed in one piece of wood or other appropriate material and is charac; terized at its ends with reduced portions 8l which carry lateral projections 11 extending in opposite directions and shaped as illustrated so as to permit free play of the legs of a child alongside each projection 11'. Also in accordance with my invention the lateral projections 11 are arranged flush with or in the same horizontal plane as the major portion of thesweep, and when deemed expedient the upper side of the sweep may be painted or otherwise embellished adjacent to its ends as designated by 12 so as to simulate the inner edges of the rear portions ofthe bodies of kiddie cars. l
Appropriately connected to and pendent from the described end portions of the sweep 8 are rear bifurcated wheel carriers 13 and forward bifurcated Wheel carriers 14, the wheels 15`and 16 in said carriers being arranged on transverse pins 17, and the bifurcations in the carriers being wider than the thickness of the wheels so as to permit lateral movement of the wheels in the carriers incident to the operation or use of the device. It will also be noticed by comparison of Figs. 1 to 3 that the forward portion of each lateral sweep projection 11 is provided with an upstanding post 18 by which iscarried a handle bar 19.
In the practical use of my novel device, two children occupy the outer end portions of the sweep 8 and serve by action of their feet against the ground to rotate the sweep about its center of movement. In thus operating the device the child derives as much pleasure and entertainment as when operating a separate kiddie car, and at the same time the children are kept in close company and each is caused to emulate the other in quickly moving the sweep with the result Athat the device is adapted to afford much more pleasure, entertainment and wholesome exercise to two children than is the case where the children operate independent kiddie cars.
Notwithstanding the practical advantages of my novel merry-go-round it will be manifest that the device is extremely simple and Aof the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire. however, to be understood as contining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modification may be made such as fall Within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.
Having describedimy'invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,
A Wheeled merry-go-round comprising a pivotally mounted sweep, a support therefor, and Wheels supporting the end portions of the sweep and adapted to travel in acircle on the ground or any other surface; the said sweep being provided at its ends with reduced portions carrying integral flush lateral projections extending in opposite directions therefrom and shaped to simulate kiddie car bodies, and the wheels being mounted in carriers pendent from said simulating portions, and the said lateral projections be ing provided with posts and handles on the posts,
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
" GLENN R. BEEBE.
