HEINRICH JABLONOWSKY, OF RIVERSIDE, NEW JERSEY.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ban-an Patented Apr. 24, 1917.
Application filed July 6, 1916. Serial No. 107,729.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH JABL0N- OWSKY, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Riverside, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in musical toy combinations, and has as its principal object, the provision of a toy susceptible of producing a number of different sounds by operating the same in different manner.
Another object is to provide a toy of the type described, of relatively low manufacturing cost, which is not readily liable to become disordered, and which is calculated to furnish amusement and enjoyment for children of either sex.
These objects are accomplished by the novel design and construction herein de scribed and indicated in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of the entire apparatus, and indications shown of its operation, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The apparatus is comprised of a vessel 10 having a beaded upper rim 11, the vessel preferably having slanting walls and made of resonant material.
Over the top of the vessel is a tightly stretched diaphragm of parchment 12, or similar substance held securely in place by the encircling band or cord 14 which is disposed directly below the beading 11, holding the edges 15 of the diaphragm in the position indicated.
Attached to the center of the diaphragm is a vertical post 16, in such manner as to stand erect under normal conditions.
When the fingers are moistened and moved over the surface ofthe post 16, as indicated in Fig. 1, the device is caused to produce a sound of considerable volume, in accordance with the size of the vessel and diaphragm. At the topof this post, which Copies of this patent may be obtained for may be of hollow construction, is a whistle 17 adapted to be inserted in the mouth, and blown in the usual manner.
Secured to the bottom of the post below the diaphragm 12, and separated from the same by the washer or spaced collar 20, is the upper member 21 of a pair of cymbals, the lower member 22 of which is supported by the stand 23, secured by the footing 24: to the bottom of the receptacle.
By grasping the post firmly between the fingers and pressing sharply downward brings the elements 21 and 22 into contact causing an entirely difierent sound to be emitted than that obtained by friction of the moistened fingers along the periphery of the post.
Thus it will be seen that a novel musical instrument, combining several distinct features is indicated and that the same possesses characteristic points whereby amusement and pleasure may be furnished to young people.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a toy, the combination with an open hollow metallic receptacle of circular cross section, a flexible diaphragm engaged at the edges of said receptacle, a hollow post vertically positioned centrally of said diaphragm, and awhistle combined with said post, said post having a periphery adapted to be engaged in frictional contact with a moistened element whereby the diaphragm is caused to emit sound.
2. In a toy, the combination with a cylindrical vessel having beveled walls, a beaded upper edge, a diaphragm engaged with said edge over the open top of said receptacle, a hollow post rigidly secured vertically upon said diaphragm, a cymbal element at the bottom of said post below said diaphragm, a second cymbal element supported within said receptacle in register with the first ele ment, and a whistle formed with said post.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this ninth day of June, A. D. 1916.
HEINRICH JABLONOWSKY.
