WHEELED WINDMILL TOY.
\ siding at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Qhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheeled Windmill Toys, of which thefol lowing is a specificatio I This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wheeled windmill toys and the primary object of the invention is to provide a toy of this kind which is extremely simple and durable in construction and capable of being cheaply and easily manufactured.
Another object of the invention is to provide a windmill toy including a windmill structure mounted upon a wheeled support, with operative connections between the wheels of the support and the 'windwheel whereby, when the toyis drawn by a child, said wheels are revolved and the toy will have the appearance of a miniature windmill.
With the above general objects in view and others that will be come apparent asthe nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.

which is formed from. the-blank 5 ofFig. 6. This blank is a substantially rectangular sheet of metal provided with marginal portions 6 which are bent at right angles upon the lines 7 and which are centrally apertured as at 8, the central portion 'of'the blank being provided with a comparatively. large rectangularopenlng 9 for a purpose which will presently become apparent.
An axle 10 is journaled in the marginal portions 6 by passing through the apertures 8, and this shaft is heldin the usual manner against longitudinal movement relative to the base 5 by means of the stop members 11 rigidly carried thereby at the inner sides ofthe marginal portions 6. Supporting wheels 12 are fastened upon the ends of the shaft or axle 10, and these wheels may be ofv any preferred form although the "construction of .the same disclosed is desired As shown, these wheels are each composed of a sheet metalrim or hoop '13 provided with spokes 1n the end of crossed strips 14 which are flanged at their outer ends as at 15 and riveted through: said flanges to the hoop'13- asat l6, thestrips'le being rigidly connected ,where they cross by soldering or thelike and the axle 10 being fastened in,

Thehood 17 thus forms the top and and rear walls of similar formation and indicated at 18 are secured in the ends of the hood as best seen in Fig.1to provide an side walls of the housing structure, and front ornamental inclosure; The walls 18 are formed from blanks such as the blank 18 of Fig. 5. and'this blankis provided with an upper bendable tongue 19 adapted to pass through the; slot 20 of the blank 17 when forming the rear wall and through a similar slot 21 of the blank 17 when forming the front wall, said slots 20 and 21 being provided adjacent the longitudinal edges of the blank 17 at the central portion of the latter. After the tongues 19 of the walls 18 are passed through the slots 20 and 21 they are bent at right 'anglesfagainst the outer face of the hood 1'? as shown in Fig. 1. The
walls 18 are further each provided with side bendable tongues 22, and thesetongues of the rear wall are directed through slots 2-3 provided in the blank 17 adjacent the ends of the latter and in alinement with the. slot 20, while the tongues 22 of the front wall are directed-through similar slots 2 1 in the end portions of the blank 17 and in alinement with the slot 21. These tongues 22 are also bent at right angles against the outer face of the hood. A pair of tongues are further provided on the lower edge of each wall 18, and the tongues 25 of the rear wall are directed through a slot 26 in the blank 5 while saidtongues 25 of the front wall are directed through a similar slot 27 in said blank 5. The tongues of each pair 25' are bent at right angles in opposite directions into engagement with the undersurface of the platform 5 as best seen in full lines in Fig. 1 and in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The entire housing structure is thus rigidly assembled and secured upon the platform.
A grooved pulley 28' is rigidly fastened upon the central portion of the axle 10 so as to partially project upwardly through the opening 9 of the platform 5 within the hood 17, and the flexible member or belt 29 passes around said pulley 28 as well as upwardly and around another cylindrical pulley 30 whichis journaled in the upper end of the housing. The pulley 30 is secured upon a shaft 31 which extends through alined openings 32 provided in the front and rear walls 18, and the forward end of said shaft 31 is threaded as shown. The windwheel is fastened uponthis forward end of the shaft 31 and preferably consists of a pair of double blade members 33 and 34 which cross each other at right angles 1 and which are slidably received upon the screw threaded end of the shaft 31 and rigidly clamped in proper relative position 1 between nuts 35 and 36 respectively threaded upon the shaft 31 after and before the windwheel members are placed thereon. By adjusting the nuts. longitudinally of the shaft 31, the position ofythe windwheel may be prhanged as indicated by dotted lines in 1g.
a As the pulley 28 is arranged with its axis of rotation at right angles to the axis of rotation of pulley 30 the belt 29 is twisted and in order to properly guide said belt, the
latter passes througha guide 37 consisting of a single piece of wire coiled at its centralportion to provide abelt guiding loop 38 and flattened at its ends as at 39 to provide bendable tongues which pass through apertures 40 of the walls 18 and are bentor clenchedagainst the outer faces of the lat; ter. A comparatively long handle, only part of which is shown at 41 is riveted centrally to the forward edge of the platform 5, the rivets passing 1 through perforations 41' shown in Fig; 6, and by means of said handlethe toy maybe drawn or pulled forwardly for causing rotation of the support- 7 ing wheels 12. This imparts rotation to shaft oraxle 10 and pulley 28 from which the rotary motion is transmitted to shaft 31 and the windwheel through the belt 29 and pulley 30. Forward movement of the toy thus produces the effect of a miniature windmill in operation and the general appearance of the device as a whole is given a realistic atmosphere. It is believed that the construction and 0poration as well as the advantages'of the pressaid hood and securing said wall members in the opposite ends of the hood to form with the latter a windmill housing, a shaft journaled in the upper end of the housing through saidfront and rear walls and having a windwheel secured upon the forward end thereof exteriorly of said housing, and means including a pulley upon said shaft operatively connected to the wheels of said wheeled support for causing rotation of said windwheel upon forward movement of the toy. 1

In a windmill toy, a platform formed of a rectangular sheet metal member with its side marginal portions bent downwardly at right angles, an axle journaled through said downwardly bent portions and havingsupporting wheels rigidly fastened upon the ends thereof, said platform being provided with a central opening, a pulley rigidly fastened upon said axle and projecting upwardly through saidcentral openingyfla sheet metal housing including an inverted U- shaped housing having attached front and rear wall members provided with bent tongues passing through the platform and securing the housing on said platform, a shaft iournaled in the upper end thereof with itsaxis of rotation at right angles to the axis of said axle, a windwheel upon the forward end of said shaft, a pulley upon said shaft within said housing, and a twisted beltpassing around both aforesaid pulleys whereby rotation of said supporting wheels will cause rotation of saidwindwheel.
3. in a windmill toy,.a platform formed of a rectangular sheet metal member. with its side marginal portions bent downwardly at right angles, an axle journaled through said downwardly bent portions and having supporting wheels rigidly fastened upon the ends thereof, said platform being provided with a central opening, a pulley rigidly fastened upon said axle and projecting upwardly through said central opening, a housing rigidly fastened upon the platform and having a shaft journaled in the upper end thereof with its axis of rotation at right angles to the axis of said axle, a windwheel upon the forward end of said shaft, a pulley upon said shaft within said housing, a twisted belt passing around both aforesaid pulleys whereby rotation of said supporting wheels will cause rotation of said windwheel, and a guide for said belt Within the housing including a wire member with a central coiled guide portion and with bent ends passing through the housing to secure the guide to the latter.

In a windmill toy, a platform formed of a rectangular sheet metal member with its side marginal portions bent downwardly at right angles, an axle journaled through said downwardly bentportions and having with a central opening, a pulley rigidly fan tened upon said axle and projecting upwardly through said central opening, a sheet metal housing rigidly fastened upon the platform and having a shaft journaled in the upper end thereof with its axis of rotation at right angles to the axis of said axle, a windwheel upon the forward end of said shaft, a pulley upon said shaft within said housing, a twisted belt passing around both aforesaid pulleys whereby rotation of said supporting wheels will cause rotation of said windwheel, said housing including a transversely disposed substantially U-shaped inverted hood member, and sheet metal front and rear wall members provided with bent tongues securing the same within the ends of said hood and securing the housing upon the platform.
