" certain amount of skill in its operation.
A further object is to provide a device the class described particularly adapted to teach the young child to hit ball with a bat.
A further object is to provide a de ice or the class described in which a slotted bat and a rubber ball may be utilized in producing noises.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the fol owing specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a bat embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is an end view of the device shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a side view of the same device.
In carrying out my invention 1 make use of a hat 1 which may be made of wood. hat 1 is provided with an elongated slot 2 separating the striking portion of the bat into an upper portion 3 and a lower portion 4. Each of these portions may be provided with transverse openings 5 and 6 which may be in alignment with each other substantially as shown. If desired, the upper portion 13 may be relatively larger and more rigid than the lower portion l. A string or band 7 which may be made of rubber may be supported in any suitable manner by the upper The Serial No. 563,174.
the purpose of making this lower portion w more flexible.
The noise is produced in my device by striking the ball with the bat in any manner adapted to snap the lower portion 4 against the upper portion 8. If desired, the string and the ball may be dispensed with and the noise may be produced by suitably striking the bat against any object having sufiicient rigidity to snap the portions 3 and 4t tog-ether.
I claim:
1. A clapper means having a handle portion and a clapping portion, said clapping portion including two elongated clapping members connected to said handle portion at their inner end and separated from each other at their outer end, one of said clapping members being flexible and adapted to snap against the other of said clapping members for the purpose of making a noise, each of said clapping members being perforated and threaded intermediate its center and its outer end by a string having a ball secured thereto for the purpose herein described, said perforations extending transversely through the clappers and being in substantial alignment with each other.
2. A device for producing a noise comprising a bat having an integral handle portion and an integral elongated slotted portion,
said slotted portion comprising two elongated substantially parallel extending memhere which are separated at their outer ends, one of which is adapted to strike against the other when it is struck for producing av noise thereby, said extending members being perforated transversely intermediate of their centers and their outer end, said perforations being threaded by a rubber string secured to said bat at one end and secured to a rubber ball at the other end for the purpose herein described.
ARTHUR 0. SMITH.
