w. R. LIND BALL AND BAT TOY Filed Aug. 1. 1921 Patented Mar. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM It. LIND. OF CINCINNATI. OHIO.
BALL AND BAT TOY.
Application filed August 1, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. WILLIAM R. LIND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ball and Rat Toys, of which the following is a description.
l\Iy invention relates to ball and bat toys wherein a racquet shaped hat is employed for striking, a rebounding ball releasably attached thereto by an elastic cord.
My invention has for its object the provision of a toy wherein a. bat is employed for striking a rebounding ball releasably held captive to the hat by an elastic band; further to provide a means whereby the ball may be readily detached from the elastic band; further to provide a means whereby the elastic band may be readily detached from the bat; and further to provide a means whereby the elastic band may be readily replaced when broken.
My invention consists in a bat. and a rebounding ball attached thereto by an elastic band; further in the means whereby the elastic band is releasably attached to the bat; further in the means by which the elastic band is releasably attached to the ball whereby the ball and bat may be utilized without the ball being held captive by the bat.
My invention further consists in the parts and COIllbllliltlOll and arrangement of parts as herein described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved toy in use, illustrating the manner of employing the same when the ball is held captive to the bat;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross section of my improved toy taken in a plane corresponding to the line 2- 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the ball and illustrating a means for releasably attaching the elastic band thereto;
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section of the same taken in a plane corresponding to line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a detail of the means for releasably attaching the elastic band to the ball;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of my improved toy in use illustrating the manner in which the same may be employed, when the ball is detached from the bat.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated a bat 10 comprises a compara- Serial No. 488 965.
tively broad portion 11 and a handle 12. A rebounding ball 13 preferably formed hollow of resilient material such as rubber is releasably held captive. to the bat 10 as by an elastic connection 14. The elastic connection preferably comprises a band of clastic material such as an elastic rubber band having strands 15 and 16 connected at their ends by loops 1? and 18. The band is attached to the bat as by being received through a hole E20 located centrally in the broad portion ll and held in place as by a retaining pin 21 received through the loop 17.
In order to readily attach and detach the elastic connection from the ball I provide a snap 23. This snap comprises eyes 2! and 25 joined by connection 26. The eye 24 has a spring" end 27 adapted to coact with a stationary end 28 on the eye 25 to form an opening 29 when the spring end is depressed as shown by dotted lines indicated at A in Fig. 5.
The other end of the elastic connection is preferably releasably attached to the. snap 23 as by passing the loop 18 thereof through the eye and passing strands l3 and 16 through the loop 18 to form a knot 30.
Means are provided whereby the snap 23 may be quickly attached to and detached from the ball 13. Thus an attaching member comprises pads 36 and 3. joined bv band 38. The pads 36 and 37 are pretenibli cemented to the ball in any usual manner. The attaching member is preferably formed of non-breakable and elastic material such as rubber and so devised as to size as not to in terfere with the action of the ball when employed separately from the hat. The elastic connection may be readily attached to the ball by passing the stationary end 28 under the band 38, causing the spring end 27 to spring back and permit the said band to enter the eye 25 and be retained therein.
In use the ball is grasped by one hand and the bat 10 held by the handle 13 in the other hand. The ball is then pulled away from the bat thereby expanding the elastic connection -14 whereupon the ball may be re leased and struck by the hat and caused to rebound. This may be repeated as often as desired depending on the skill and dexterits of the user. i
Should it be desired to strike the ball when not held captive to the bat. the band 38 of the attaching member 35 is icmoved from the eye 25 through the opening 29. formed by depressing the spring end 27 of the snap 23. The retaining pin 21 may tIlS) be withdrawn from the loop 17 and the elastic band pulled out of the hole 20 in the hat. The bat may then be employed to strike the ball. The attaching member being elastic enables the same to lie perfectly am: against the surface of the ball after the snap is detached therefrom, whereby the ball may be separately employed as a rebounding ball without interfering with the action thereof.
By thus providing a ready means of at tachine' the elastic connection to the bat and snap. the said connection may rapidly and easily be replaced when for any reason the same becomes broken or worn out.
My impoved device forms a ready and useful means of developing keenness of vision and dexterity of the limbs and also provides healthful recreation as well.
\Yhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a ball and bat toy, a bat. a ball. a band having padded ends cemented to said ball and adapted to lie flat thereag'ainst whereby a holding loop is formed, a snap hook adapted to engage said loop and an elastic connection releasably connected to said bat, whereby said ball and bat may be used separately, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
2. In a ball and bat toy. a bat comprising a broad portion having an aperture therein, and a handle on said broad portion. a ballfan elastic connection adapted to releasably hold said ball captive to said bat. and comprising a pair of elastic strands joined by loops at their respective ends. one of said loops of said elastic connection re ceived through said aperture in said bat. and a retaining pin received in said loop, whereby one end of said elastic connection is releasably secured to said bat, means for releasably attaching the other end of said a pair of eyes integrally connected on one side, a spring end on one of said eyes adapted to coact with a stationary end on the other of said eyes. and the other of said loops of said elastic connection secured to one of said eyes of said snap by passing said last named loop of said elastic connection therethrough and passing said strands through said loop to form a releasable knot.
