TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Application filed February 3, 1917. Serial N 0. 146,333.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUDSON O. MCHENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county issouri, have invented certain useful Improvements in Toys, of Which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
he invention relates to a toy and more particularly to the class of amusement devices for use by children.
he primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which simulates a ball and bat and when manipulated gives amusement to an operator and at the same time requires skill in the manipulation thereof for the striking of the ball with the batto cause said ball to bound and rebound in the air.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the ball is suspended upon an elastic cord adjustably connected to the bat so that the ball can be struck to bound and rebound any desirable distance, the device affording amusement and serving to attract the operator to assure accuracy in the striking of the ball continuously by the bat without missing said ball when in motion.
A still further object of the invention is t e provision of a device of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form and lends attractiveness thereto and requiring skill on the part of the operator when manipulating the same.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the ball cannot become lost when the device is active, yet the ball can be adjusted with the elastic cord relative to the bat to vary the throw of the ball or the distance of travel thereof when the cord is extended, the device being adaptable for indoor, as well as outdoor, play.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, novel in form, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing of Jasper and State of I and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
' Figure 1 is vice constructed in vention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the bat.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detailthe de vice comprises a bat A preferably made from wood, although the same may be made of any other suitable material, having a paddle-like striking portion 5, a reduced shank 6 and a curvilinear shaped handle 7, the latter being formed with an ear extension 8.
On the ear extension 8 is adapted to be wound one end portion of an elastic cord 9 the same being extended longitudinally of the shank from one side of the handle to the opposite side of said shank and is trained through spaced holes 10 formed in the striking portion 5 contiguous to the juncture of said striking portion with the shank 6, the cord 9 being reversely trained through said holes and has a major portion of its remaining length free for the carriage of a bounding element, such as a resilient ball 11 which is fastened onto the opposite free end of said cord 9 in any suitable manner.
The end portion of the elastic cord 9 which is wrapped or wound about the ear extension 8 can be so wound in a manner to prevent any possibility of the slipping of the winding stretches of said cord thereon but the wound stretches can be unwrapped or unwound from the ear extension and the cord 9 adjusted through the holes 10 thereby lengthening the cord so as to vary'the travel of the ball 11, which is preferably made from rubber and of the hollow type, when the said ball portion 5 of the bat in the manlpulation thereof by the user or operator of the same.
In the operation of the device, the bat A is grasped at the handle 7 thereof by the hand of the user so that the ball 11 upon the elastic cord 9 can be tossed into the air and upon manipulation of the bat the ball 11 can be struck thereby causing it to bound and rebound. On the rebounding of the accordance with the inis struckby the striking a perspective View of the dehall it s the purpose of the user of the de vice to endeavor to strike the ball 11 to sustain the same in motion in a bounding and rebounding course. it requires. skill on the part or". the user of the device to strike the hall each time the same rebounds Without missing the same thereby lending attractiveness and amusement to the manipulator.
The device can be readily used within or out-doors and it is clearly obvious that the elastic cord 9 can be adjusted for limiting the tossing of the ball or the bounding and rebounding thereof when the bat is manipulated and the cord extended and contracted. The interest of the operator is maintained by reason of the fact that it is the purpose to strikethe ball With the bat oneach rebounding inotion thereof.
it is to be understood that the hat A can be used "for advertising purposes, as such advertising matter can he printed or otherwise marked thereon. Also an elastic cord 9 can be passed through the handle 7 near the rear end to hold the cord in alinenient with 1e eat,- it being understood, of course that cord may be attached in any desi ab 1 is i anner to said hat to suit the manufacturer or user of one toy and said can be 01 any advantages of the invention will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What 1 claim as new is:
A device of the character described comprising a bat for from a single piece of relatively fiat material comprising a paddle-like striking nortion, a reduced shank continuing therefrom, a handle continuing from the shank, and an ear proiecting from the inner terminal of the handle, the striking portion: being provided with a pair of spaced longitudinally arranged openings the handle being also formed with an opening alining With the other openings an elastic cord having one end secured to the ear and having a slack portion iereon arthe ear, the cord being arranged through the opening in the handle extended longitudinally of the handle and the shank and reversely trained through the openings in the strili'ng portion and arranged longitudinally of and against the 0poosite face of the striking portion and havthe main outer portion free, and a recarried by the outer terminal of n of the cord. inony whereof E hereby my
