'7 Claims.

This invention relates to a paddle and tethered projectile and it; is-an object of; the invention to provide'an article of this kind wherein the paddle carries a movable blade or jaw to provide means whereby the projectile on rebound may be caught between the paddle and the jaw or blade.

Another'object of the invention is to provide an article of thiskind wherein the paddle has mounted thereon a blade or jaw readily movable withrespect to the paddle for catching a projectile between the paddle and blade or jaw and wherein the blade or jaw can be readily and easily manipulated by the hand of the person holdingthe paddle.

The invention; consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangementofthe severalparts of my improved paddle and tethered projectile, wherein certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation of a paddle and tethered projectile embodying the invention with. the blade or jaw closed and the projectile in an inactive position;

Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the device as shown in Figure 1, the paddle being shown held by'a hand of a person, and striking the projectile for a throw ahead;

' Figure 3 is a view in side elevation and on a 'reducedscale showingthe projectile about tobe caught on the rebound. between the paddle and blade or jaw;

Figure. 4, is a view in side elevation showing a projectile in position to be thrown ahead of the paddle, the position of the paddle and blade or jaw at the end of the throw being shown in dotted lines;

Figure 5 is a side elevational view showing the device holding-a projectile andin a position to throw. the projectile upwardly, the position of the paddle and. blade or jaw to catch. the projectile on, return being indicated by broken lines;

Figure 6 is an elevational view of a paddle and tethered projectile constructed in accordance with another embodiment of the invention;

Figure 7 is a perspective view of the device as comprised in Figure 6 showing the blade or jaw in open position; and

Figure 8 is an enlargedsectional view taken on the line 3-8 Figure 6.

In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 of the drawings P denotes a paddle of desired configuration and dimension but shown as of an ovate form with the smaller end provided with a co-planar extension I constituting a handgrasp or grip. The large end portion of the paddle P at substantially the transverse center of the paddle P has extending outwardly from the peripheral edge thereof, an eye member 2 to which is attached an end portion of a tether 3 of preferred length. The opposite or outer end portion of the tether 3 is securely attached to an elastic projectile 4, herein shown as a spherical body or ball of desired material.

Overlying a face of the paddle P is a blade or jaw B also ovate inform but of lesser diameter than the paddle P. The blade or jaw B is arranged centrally of the paddle P and the smaller end portion of the blade or jaw B is hingedly connected, as at 6, to the smaller end portion of the paddle P and immediately adjacent to the inner end of the hand grasp or grip l.

Carried by the smaller or hinged end portion of the blade or jaw B and disposed transversely thereacross is a loop member 6 so positioned with respect to the hinge connection 5 as to allow to be inserted therethrough, the thumb of the hand of the person holding the hand grasp or grip I, so that the blade B may be moved at will away from and back into contact with the paddle P.

When the, blade or jaw B is held against the paddle P, the device can be readily used in the usual or conventional manner to strike the member 4 and continue to do so. However, when it is desired to make the play more interesting by capturing the member or ball 4 on the rebound the thumb of the hand holding the paddle can 7 be used to movethe blade or jaw B away from the paddle P toa position as illustrated in Figure 3 to provide what is called a trap or basket to receive the member or ball 4 on a rebound and then to move the blade or jaw B toward the paddle P to clamp the member or ball 4 against the paddle P.

As shown in Figure 3 the blade or jaw B has been moved in open position to allow for trapping of the. member or ball 4 after being knocked substantially straight ahead by the paddle P, as indicated by Figure 2.

In Figure 4 as illustrated a means of play where the member or ball 4 is first clamped between the paddle P and blade or jaw B and then thrown by swinging action of the device with properly timed release or opening movement of the blade or jaw B for the capturing of the projectile or ball 4 between the paddle P and the blade of jaw B.

In Figure 5 is shown a manner of play whereby the projectile or ball 4 is thrown upwardly," as

indicated by dotted lines and then captured upon return between the paddle P and blade or jaw B as illustrated by full lines.

In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in Figures 6 to 8 of the drawings, the manner of play is substantially the same as hereinbefore set forth with respect to the first embodiment of the invention except that the blade or jaw A is connected with the paddle C for swinging movement in a direction laterally of the paddle C.

In this second embodiment of the invention the paddle C and the blade or jaw A are substantially the same as to form and dimension and these elements are preferably oblong. The blade or jaw has one longitudinal marginal portion hingedly connected, as at 7 to a horizontal marginal portion of the blade A and in a manner whereby the blade or jaw A overlies the paddle C and has close contact therewith when the blade or jaw is in fully closed position.

Extending outwardly from an end of the paddle C at the inner or hinged longitudinal marginal portion thereof, is an elongated member 8 coplanar with the paddle C and which provides a hand grasp or grip. The end marginal portion of the blade or jaw A adjacent to the end portion of the paddle C having the member 8, has disposed transversely thereacross a loop member 9 for the passage of the thumb of the hand of the person grasping the member 8.

The extremity of the paddle C remote from the member 8, has extending out from its edge, an eye member Hi to which is secured an extremity of a tether I l of desired length and securely attached to the outer extremity of the tether i l is an elastic projectile M such as a ball as shown.

The device as embodied in this second form of the invention is used in play the same as the first embodiment as the thumb of the hand associated with the loop 9 may readily swing the blade or jaw A open or closed as desired.

In the first embodiment of the invention the opening movement of the blade or jaw B is only for a degree dependent upon the distance the thumb of the hand can be brought back. In the second embodiment, the thumb of the hand may be turned to the side for approximately ninety (90") degrees and a corresponding extent of opening movement of the paddle A. It is obvious,

therefore, that the second form of the invention r tile, a tether secured to the projectile and the 6 paddle, and means carried by the blade to be engaged by a digit of the hand holding the paddle, for effecting the swinging of the blade by the digit away from the paddle to a position to receive the projectile between the paddle and blade.

2. A toy device of the character stated, comprising a paddle member, a handle attached to and extending from an end thereof, a play member, a tether coupling the play member to the paddle member, a second member comprising a flat blade of approximately the same form as the paddle member and designed to be positioned against one face of the paddle member, a hinge coupling between the members by which the second member may be swung away from the said face of the paddle member to an extent suflicient to receive the play member between the paddle member and the blade member, and means carried by the blade member adjacent to the paddle member handle for coupling to the blade member a digit of a hand grasping the handle.

3. A device as set forth in claim 2, wherein the said means carried by the blade member comprises a loop member for receiving the digit.

A device of the character stated in claim 2, wherein the paddle is approximately pear shaped in outline and the handle extends from the apical end thereof and the blade member is of corresponding outline, and said hinge coupling being between the apical end of the blade member and the paddle adjacent to the inner end of the handle.

A toy device of the character stated in claim 2, wherein both the paddle and blade member are of elongate rectangular outline and said hinge coupling is between two longitudinaledges of the members, and said handle extends from the paddle at one end and adjacent to the hinged longitudinal edge thereof.

A device of the class described comprising a paddle, a projectile, a tether secured to the projectile and paddle, and a movable means for connection with and control by a digit of a hand holding the paddle for clamping the projectile to the paddle, said means comprising a blade pivotally connected to the paddle and a loop member carried by the blade.

A device of the class described comprising a paddle, a projectile, a tether secured to the projectile and paddle, and a movable means for connection with and control by a digit of a hand holding the paddle for clamping the projectile to the paddle, said movable means comprising a blade, and a hinge coupling between adjacent marginal portions of the paddle and blade to allow the blade to swing laterally with respect to the paddle.
