Be it known that I, IcNAriUs MArsANo, a citizen of the United States, residing at VilmingtOn, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy designed to be trundled or moved forward or backward over the floor or ground, and in such movements to actuate one or more figures loosely supported thereon, and cause bells to ring and iags to flutter for the amuse ment of the child using the device.
With such objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrange ment of parts hereinafter described, more particularly set forth in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 isa side elevation of my 1mproved toy. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 3 mainly a section on a vertical line through the center of the structure, certain parts not being included sectionally.
indicates a skeleton wheel rotatable on an axle 11 formed of heavy wire which, after passing through the wheel hub 12, is bent rearwardly at a right angle on each side of the wheel as at 13 to a point beyond its periphery, the two ends 14 being brought together and inserted in a hole bored in the end of a wooden handle 15. I prefer 4to construct the wheel 10 of a strip of tin of the desired width bent into circular shape, the edges of the strip being rolled inwardly to give the necessary stiffness. The spokes 17 are in two sets, one set being on each side of the wheel, said spokes being stamped or made from sheet metal and soldered to the tubular hub 12. The outer end 18 of each spoke is passed through a slot in the rim, after which said end is bent sidewise and may be soldered if desired.
A U-shaped wire 19 straddles the wheel 10 forward of a vertical line through the axle 11, and is secured at its inner ends to the side bars 13, somewhat in rear of the axle, by winding these ends around said bars 13, as at 20.
Spanning the top of the wheel 10 from the U-shaped wire 19 to the said bars 13, where they turn inwardly behind the wheel,
are two curved wires 21 which arch over the latter, their ends being secured to the bar 13 and wire 19 by loops 22 23, respectively. The wires 21 at the loops 23 proliect upwardly to form stafl's24 which carry flags 25.
A bell 26 is suspended from each wire 21, each hell having a movable clapper or hammer 27 adapted to be struck by a finger 28 formed by an extension of the end of one or more of the spokes 17. The bell 26 may be fixed or hung so as to swing, in either case a flag staff and fiag 29 being carried by its support. The wheel l0 and its spokes 17 may be stamped out from a sheet of metal together with the required projection or projections for ringing the bell.
Within the wheel, between the two sets of spokes, is a figure 30, preferably overbalanced; or if desired, several of such figures may be mounted to swing freely on the hub 12 in the plane of the wheel when the latter is drawn or pushed or moved backward or forward over the iioor or ground.
In the use of my improved toy as the wheel is rolled by the child in the act of trundling the toy, the lingers 28 strike the clappers 27 and sound the bells, and the figure or figures 30 swing forwardly or rearwardly, or may be made to turn somersaults. The bells also will be caused to ring by the rising and falling movement of the handle 15 by the child in the act of trundling the toy. When a bell is attached loosely to its wire 21, the flag carried by soY the bell support moving with the bell will v be given a fluttering motion. Bells differing in type from those shown may be mount ed on the arches 21, and be of variant tones.
This toy is simple, inexpensive and attractive to children, and in view of its construction will stand rough usage.
1. A trundling toy comprising a wheel having a perforated rim, an axle wire the ends of which are bent around the wheel and brought into parallel relation to each other, a tubular hub mounted on the axle part of said wire, two sets of spokes attached to said hub, one set being at each side of the wheel and the outer end of each spoke passing through a perforation in the wheel rim, lateral projections or fingers formed by extensions of spokes at the connection between them and the wheel rim,
a handle attached to the extremities of said axle wire, a wheel frame secured to the axle wire and extending over the wheel to the handle, a figure within said wheel adapted to swing freely upon the wheel hub, and bells mounted on said overhead frame having swinging elappers or hammers adapted to engage with fingers of spokes and thus sound the bells.
2. In a trundling toy, a frame, a wheel journaled in said frame7 said wheel comprising a perforated sheet metal rim, a hub7 and sheet metal spokes radiating from each end of said hub, the outer ends of Certain of said spokes extending through perfora- 15 adapted to engage said ngers7 thus sound- 20 ing the bells.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IGNATIUS MAISANO.
