J. 5'. HANCE COUNTERBALANCING FIGURE TOY Nov. 16 1926.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COUNTERBALANCING FIGURE TOY.
Application filed'January 11, .1926. Serial No. 80,558.
Thisinvention relates to toys and has more particular reference to a toy of the figure type, the primary object of the device being to provide such a device that will be highly amusing to children and that may equally as well be employed for advertising purposes in show windows and the like to attract passers-by to the goods on display in the windows.
A further and important object is to provide a device of this character that is of relatively simple construction, and that may be manufactured and marketed at extremely low cost, the same being, notwithstanding these facts, highly efficient in operation and well adapted for all the purposes intended.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout both of the views:
Figure 1 is a detail vertical section of my improved toy, and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary reduced elevation of the same.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, a toy constructed in accordance with the present invention, constitutes the provision of a hollow casing 5 of sheet metal or other suitable material that is of general inverted cone shape as shown. The opposite ends of the casing 5 are open while disposed within the upper open end thereof is a closure wall 6 of wood or other inexpensive material. Opposed side walls of the casing 5 are formed with suitable sized and shaped openings 7 and 8 in somewhat vertical ofi'set relation as clearly shown in the sectional view.
Disposed within the casing 5 and attached thereto in a suitable manner is a conventional form of inexpensive spring motor 9, that includes among other structural elements a star wheel 10 and an escapement dog 11 that is attached at its pivotal point to an upwardly extending slightly curved wire rod 12, that terminates at its upper end at the lower end of the opening 8 in the adjacent wall of the casing 5.
My novel toy further constitutes the provision of a Wire rod 13 bent to describe an arc as shown. The same adapted to extend at its lower endwithin said slot 8, and at its opposite end to be rigidly attached to a figurel, which in the present inst-anceis in simulation ofv a galloping horse.
The end of the wire rod 13 within the casing 5 is adapted to have supported therefrom another figure 15, which in the present instance simulates a bull dog.
Interconnecting the curved rod 13 directly outwardly of the casing 5 and the upper end of the'rod 12 is a wire link 16.
The closure wall 6 of the casing 5 is formed upon its top side and at its edge adjacent the upper end of the rod 13' with one or a pair of notches 17 within which one or both hooks of the hind legs of the figure horse are adapted to engage, for normally supporting the same in the position shown, this position being secured by the weight of the figure 15 upon the opposite end of the curved rod 18.
The usual winding means is rovided for the spring motor 9 and also a suitable releasing means constitutes a part thereof. When the motor is released, the escapement dog 13 will be actuated in opposite directions for consequently actuating the rod 12 which will cause a movement of the curved rod 13 in a reverse oscillatory manner for consequently causing the horse figure 14 to rock upon its hind legs and simulate a prancing horse. The forepart of figure 15 will also be projected through the opening 7 in one direction. of movement of the rod and in the other direction of movement will be caused to enter the casing which complementary movement of the two figures will prove highly interesting to children as well as grown-ups.
Minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope ofthe appended'claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. .In a toy of the class described, a hollow substantially conical shaped casing having a top wall and openings in the opposite side walls thereof, a spring motorrdisposed within the casing and including a conventional escapement dog, a rod attached to the pivotal point of the dog and adapted to be oscillated by the movement thereof, a curved rod having one end thereof extending within the opening in one of said side walls, a
link connection between the rod intermediate its ends and said escapement dog actuated rod, a figure connected to the exterior end of the rod which normally terminates directly above the top wall of the casing, said figure including leg members supported for rest upon said top wall, and an additional figure hung upon the interior end of the rod and normally disposed within the casing, said figures adapted to respectively rock upon the top wall of the casing and be moved into or out of the casing through the openings in the opposite side walls thereof.
2. In a toy of the character described, a
