Application June 16, 1936, Serial No. 85,498
"1 Claims.
This invention relates to educational toys and particularly tothat class thereof made from sheet material, such as card board. The object of my improvements is to provide a device of the class specified, simple in construction and which may be painted and assembled by a child, who may thereby acquire facility in color work and simple mechanical skill.
To these ends and others which will appear later herein, my improvements comprise features illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of the body portion of my device.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the display member of said device and which is adapted to be assembled with the body portion of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view similar to that of Fig. 1 but showing a modification thereof, and which modification may be the preferred form of said body portion.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modification of the display member of Fig. 2, adapted to be assembled with the body member of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a. plan view showing a modification of what is shown in Fig. 4..
Fig. 6 is an assembled perspective View of the members of Figs. 3 and 5, and showing the outlines of a plant 28 with blossoms. Figs. 2, 4 and 5 are designed to be similarly outlined.
Referring particularly to Fig. 1, a piece of sheet material 2, such as card board, is preferably of arcuate shape so that when it is wrapped about itself it will take a truncated conical shape, as in Fig. 6. End portion 3 is demarked from portion 2, by score line 4, so that, whenv this body portion is wrapped about itself, said portion or wall 3 is folded on said line 4, and ear 5 is inserted in slot 6. Then the left hand end is wrapped about the right hand portion and ear 1 is inserted in slot 8 thereby forming a truncated cone representing a flower pot and having a central wall 3 thereacross inside. Said Wall 3 is provided with two transverse slots 9, ll), spaced apart for the reception of foot H of display member 26 of Fig. 2.
In the modification of Fig. 3, portion 3 of Fig. 1 is omitted and ear I4 is adapted to engage slot 12 in upright score line 13 of display member 24 of Fig. 4, and ear 15 thereof to engage slot 16 of arcuate member I1, Fig. 3. Then the left hand end of member I! is wrapped about the right hand portion thereof and ear I8 is inserted in slot I9, thereby forming a truncated cone in which the display memberZ of Fig. 1 provides an upstanding central wall.
In the modification of Fig. 5, display member 21 has attached to its lower edge at score line 25, a semi-circular foot 22, adapted to be folded at right angles on score line 25, thereby providing a half bottom to the device. Cut from the lower portion of member 2!, is a similar circular edged portion 26, articulated along score line 21, parallel with score line 25. Said portion 26 may be folded at right angles to member 21, in the opposite direction to foot 22 thereby approximately completing the bottom to the device, all as shown in the assembled View of Fig. 6.
The plant outlines 28, of Fig. 6 may be varied to represent other well-known. flowers and adapted to be colored according to nature. There is thus provided an educational toy which may be economically produced, which may be shipped in flat form and which will provide instruction and amusement to children.
. It will be obvious to those skilled in the art, that the conical form of the body portion of my device is but one form of many, andthat a cylindrical or rectangular form may equally well be used.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body of sheet material adapted to be bent around upon itself, latching means for securing said body in circular form, an upright display member, and means for latching said display member in said body.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of an arcuate shaped piece of sheet material wrapped about itself into truncated conical shape, means formed on said piece of sheet material for interlatching and maintaining it in erected position, means on said sheet for supporting a display member, and a display member upstanding from said supporting means.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of an arcuate shaped piece of sheet material wrapped about itself into truncated conical shape, an ear at one end of said piece of material, a slot near the other end thereof adapted to receive said ear, an ear on that end of said strip adjacent to said slot, a slot midway the length of said arcuate member, a display member having near one edge of its lower portion a slot adapted to be engaged by the ear of the arcuate member near its end slot, and an. car on said display member opposite its slot adapted to engage the midway slot of said arcuate member.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of an arcuate shaped piece of sheet material wrapped about itself into truncated conical shape, means formed on said piece of sheet material for interlatching and maintaining it in erected position, a display member having its lower portion adapted for insertion within the conical shaped member, thereby providing an upstanding central wall, and latching means on said members for maintaining said display member in position.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body of sheet material adapted to be bent around upon itself, latching means for securing said body in. circular form, an upright member representing a plant and means for latching said upright member in said body, said upright member having at its lower edge oppositely outwardly extending feet adapted to form a bottom for the device.
6. In a device of the character described, a member of sheet material maintained in configuration forming a hollow open shell, and a representation-forming member having its lower end secured to said hollow shell, said last named member projecting upwardly from said hollow shell in substantially a vertical direction.
'7. In a device of the character described, a member of sheet material maintained in configuration forming a hollow o-pen shell, and a representation-forming member having a lower plane section secured within said hollow shell, said last named member projecting upwardly from said hollow shell in substantially a vertical direction.
