FLEXIBLE SUPPORT FOR BATTLES Filed Aug. 7, 19:59

This invention relates to toys and particularly to improvements in toy rattles and a resilient means of supporting the same.
Toys of this character are used of course to 5 amuse very small children, each of whom seems to have the common impulse to toss his toys onto the floor with the result that they must be picked up and handed to the child or placed upon his tray.
object of my invention to provide a rattle or similar toy with a flexible support and suction cup, which when applied to a supporting surface will firmly adhere thereto so as to allow the flexible support to flex and move. the rattle back and forth when engaged, and at the same time to prevent the toy from falling or being disengaged and tossed to the floor.
A further object of the invention is to provide each part of the combination of elements making up the rattle with a separable connecting means, whereby various styles and typesof rattles and supporting posts may be substituted and interchanged.
empiifled in the accompanying drawing, in
30 which: V I t Figure 1 is an elevational viewof thetoy rattle and support therefor showing the suction cup in substantially longitudinal section; and
Figure 2 is a similar view showing portions the flexible support and rattle in section.-
Referring to the drawing, 10 denotes a suction cup of elastic and resilient material, such as rubber. The cup III is the shape of a truncated cone, the upper portion comprising shock 40 part Ii with center cavity i2 and restricted opena ing II. The under wall I of thecup is arched in the usual manner, so that, as the, cup is depressed from above, the air is expelled beneath the arched wall I! while the margin thereof spreads outwardly to form a sealing contact with the supporting surface. 7 v
supported upon the suction cup II is an upright-post ll, consisting of elssticand resilient With the foregoing in mind it is the principal I accomplish these and other objects of my inmaterial, such as rubber, and having a cylindricallyformed mid portion 18 terminating at opposite ends in enlarged knobs i1, each of which comprises a shoulder or flange l8 short of theend of the knob and a terminal piece I8 tapering 5 outwardly from beneath the flange i8 and then inwardly again. To connect or mount the post ii in the suction cup It the terminal piece [9 is forced into the cavity i2 past the restricted opening l3 until the shoulder or flange l8 seats 10 upon the neck part II about the opening l3. The terminal piece i9 of the knob I! at the opposite or upper end of the post I5 is provided I with a short axial bore 20 to receivea depending stud ll of a head piece or rattle member 22. The 15 rattle may be of any conventional type, but for purposes of illustration, I have shown a lantern shaped hollow member enclosing upright bars or chimes 23 and a' centrally hung depending clapper 24 suspended from the center of the cap 2 25 of the rattle. 1 I
In operation, the suction cup i0 is fixed to a supporting surface, usually-a tray, not shown, and the child either grips the post I! and. causes it to sway to bring the chimes of the rattle 22 25 into play, or he strikes the rattle, which then bobs backward and forward ringing its chimes until the flexible post I! has righted itself. It will be appreciated that in manufacturing and in assembling this toy, the possible variety of color com- 'binations is very large as well as the different styles of rattles which may be used, it being mere- 1y necessary to substitute one rattle for another, the stud 2i of which is simply inserted in the bore 20, the wall thereof being rubber grips and adheres to the stud.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is used, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
m a toy of the character described, the combinaticn of a suction cup having an upright neck portion provided with a cavity and restricted opening for said cavity. an upright post of flexible rubber provided with a flanged knob at its end to beinserted in said cavity, the flange of w v the knob seating against the material about the restricted opening.
