This invention relates to sounding toys and while of more or less general application, is particularly designed and adapted for use in connection with crying dolls of the type which have become known in the art by the trade name Ma-Ma Dolls. 7

It is the primary object and purpose of my present improvements to provide an im proved mount or support for the sound producing and articulating device within the hollow body of the toy or doll.

It is also a novel feature of this invention to so arrange and support the sound produo ing device that a part thereof is in immediate proximity to a sound emission orifice formed in one wall of the doll or toy, said part which is visible through the orifice, being suitably formed and colored with respect to the wall surface immediately surrounding said orifice so as to realistically simulate a physical part of the body or figure represented by said toy.

The invention also has for an additionalobject to provide an improved mountingfor the sound producing device which enables the latter to be easily assembled within the body of a doll without necessitating the use of brackets, screws or other attaching means and in which suitable provision is made for yieldably cushioning said device so that the parts thereof will not be seriously damaged in the event that the doll is dropped or abusively handled.

lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved sounding toy and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts thereof as may be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and subsequently incorpo-- rated in the subjoined claims.

manifest as this descriptionproceeds that the novel features of my present disclosure are likewise capable of application and use in connection with other toy figures representing animals or birds as well as the human body. It will accordingly be understood that in the adaptation of my improvements to different kinds of toys, the sound producing device might necessarily vary widely in type and construction for the purpose of producing articulated sounds characteristic of'the animal represented by the toy. Thereforathe sound producing and articulating means per se constitute no essential part of the present disclosure. In a copending application Ser. No. 542,884, filed March 11, 1922, I have described and claimed such adevice adapted for application and use in connection with a doll, in the manner which I shall presently explain. lVithout implying any unnecessary limita tions, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a part of a hollow doll body which consists of a front half or section 5 and a rear half or section 6. For the purposes of the present explanation, it will suffice to state that the sound producing and articulating means is en: closed within a suitable casing orhousing .13, preferably, though not necessarily, of cylindrical form and having; its opposite ends closed by suitable heads. In either case, the end of the casing 13 having the protuberance or button 14; is seated in the rabbet 10' so that the sound is first emitted into the chamber or cavity 9 and hence from the navel orifice 7, it being observed that the button l l is located in close proximity to. said. orifice. Therefore, this button is clearly visible through said orifice and it is suitably painted or colored so that it will realistically simulate the inner portion of the human navel.

WTithin the cavity or chamber 12 in the wall of the rear section 6 of the doll, a granu-laror comminuted cushioning material 15, such as cork, rubber or the like, is disposed, and the other end of the. casing or housing 13 of the sound producing device is posi tioned within the open side of said recess or chamber. Thus the bodily transverse shifting movement of the sound producing device between the walls of the front and rear sections of the doll body is yieldably cushioned, the cushioning material normally acting to urge one end of the casing into close bearing contact with the walls of the rabbet 10 on the front body section 5. However, should the doll be accidentally dropped or subjected to a sharp blow, the sound producing device being cushioned by the material 12, will not be displaced, or the parts thereof damaged to such an extent as to seriously impair their properfuntioning.

In assembling the sound producing device within the hollow body of a doll, the casing or housing 13 is first seated within the chamber or recess 12 upon the granular cushioning material 15 and the other front section 5 of the doll body is then arranged in position and the two sections suitably and permanently secured together in any approved manner now known in the art. It is, of course, understood that when the frontsection 5 is applied the other end of the casing 13 is received in the rabbet 10 so that said end of the casing and the protuberance or button 14 thereof will be disposed in concentric relation to the navel orifice 7. In the operation of the device when the doll or toy is properly manipulated, the articulated sounds are produced and emitted from the orifice 7 in simulation of the human infant cry Ma-Ma. I-Iowever,in so far as the advantageous features of the mounting and arrangement of the sound producing device are concerned, they might be also employed in the use of such devices in connection with animal figures, in which case, the sound producing and articulating mechanism would of course, beof such construction as to sin'1u late the cry of the animal represented by the figure. In suchcase also, the device might be mounted and arranged in the head of the animal figure and, therefore, the projection or protuberance I l otherwise fashioned or shaped to represent a part of the mouth of the animal through which the sounds would be emitted. In other words, it is to be understood that I consider it to be broadly new in this art to mount and; support a sound producing device of any kind within the body of a figure toy, a part of which device is visible from the exterior of the toy and simulates a physical part of; the animal represented thereby. Accordingly, it is to be understood that I do not regard the present disclosure as. necessarily limited to the particular form and construction of the doll bodyor the precise mounting of; the sound producing device as heretofore described, but reserve the privilege of exemplifying my invention in other alternative forms and adopting all such legitimate modifications in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts as may be, fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim:

I. In combination with an animal toy having a hollow body provided with a sound emission orifice in a wall thereof, a sound producing device mounted within said body and having a part in proximity to said orilice and visible therethrough, the wall of said orifice and said part of the sound producing device being formed and colored whereby they together simulate, a physical part of the animal represented by said figure.

2. In combination with a doll having a hollow body provided with a navel orifice in the front wall thereof, a sound producing device mounted and arranged within said body for the emission of sound through said orifice, said device having a part thereof in close proximity to the orifice and visible therethrough, formed and colored to represent a part. of the human navel.

3. In combination with a doll having a hollow body provided with a navel orifice in its front wall and supporting means on the front and rear walls of said body, a sound producing device mounted upon said sup porting means and having a part at one of its ends concentrically positioned in proximity to said navel orifice and visible therethrough, said part being formed and colored in simulation of part of the human navel.

4. In combination with a doll having a hollow body provided with an internal chamber in its front wall and a navel orifice communicating therewith, a sound producing device mounted between the front ing internal supports on opposed walls thereof, a sound producing device including a casing having its opposite ends engaged with said supports, and means yieldably resisting movement of said casing relative to said Walls.

6. In combination with a hollow toy having internal recesses formed in opposed walls thereof, a cushioning material in one of said recesses, and a sound producing device including a casing having its end portions engaged in said recesses and yieldably cushioned against movement relative to said walls by said material.

7. In combination with a doll having a hollow body provided with a navel orifice in its front wall, the front and rear walls of said body having internal recesses formed therein in concentric relation to said orifice, a cushioning material disposed in the recess of the rear wall, and a sound producing device including a casing engaged in one of its &

ends with the latter recess upon the cushioning material and yieldingly urged into the recess of the front wall at the opposite end thereof, said material cushioning the rela tive shifting movement of the sound producing device between said walls.

8. In combination with a doll having a hollow body and opposed recesses in the inner surfaces of its front and rear walls, a

sound producing device including a casing arranged between said body walls and having its ends supported in the recesses thereof, and means for yieldably cushioning said device against shifting movement in said recesses.

9. In combination with a doll having a hollow body, supporting means on the inner surfaces of the front and rear body walls, a sound producing device including a casing engaged at its ends with said supporting means, and means opposed to one end of said casing cushioning the sound producing device against movement relative to the supporting means.
