This invention relates to novel improve ments in toys embracing musical devices and animal character representing devices, and comprises subject matter divided out of my co-pendiug application Serial No. 747,224, filed November 1, 1924:.

Among the objects of the present invention it is aimed to provide a toy having a musical device or sound producing device, which device is either formed to represent the body portion of an animal character or enclosed in a housing representing the body portion of an animal character, and such body forming portion supported by elements representing distinctive portions of animal characters.

Specifically,the present invention contemplates the provision of supports preferably composed of cardboard, celluloid or other sheet-like materialcut out to define in outline, one, the front portion of an animate character such as a child or adult in crawling position or an animal character in standing position, and the other, the rear portion of an animate character such as a child or adult in crawling position or an animal character in standing position, and a body portion supported between such supports to represent the body portion of the animate character, and such body portion consisting of a musical device or a sound producing device, or consisting of a housing for a musical device or a sound producing device. Preferably the front and rear sheet-like members representing distinctive portions of animate characters are provided with decorative effects to co-operate with the outline of these elements to produce the distinctive portions of the animate character sought to be represented.

These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detail description of eertain embodiments of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of one of the embodiments of the invention;

This toy cat as indicated clearly in Fig. 2 is composed of three main sections, the foremost portion 2 is indicated as the head and the legs of Fig. .1, and the rearmost portion 3 is indicated by the tail in Fig. l, and the rear legs, not shown. These supports may be formed of materialsuch as cardboard, celluloid, wood or metal, the specific material going into the formation of the said supports not being of the essence though it is contemplated to provide these supports of relatively thin coniguration and light material of which pressed cardboard forms a readily applicable material.

Between the supports 2 and 3 and directly connected thereto at their extremities there is formed a housing 4. In the modification of Fig. 2 the housing 4t forming a bellows consists of a container or tubular member 5 having in this casea musical source or sound producing device therein which source is actuated by the motion of the housing which in this case is made of collapsible material and held in open or spread position normally to space the supports apart and to form the body of the animal or character by the spring 6. To provide decorative ef= fects there is fixed about the forward support of the animal a ribbon 7 having a hell or other trinket 8 thereon. and rear supports are painted or printed to indicate the color and characteristics of the animal or character to be described, in Figs.

The forward 1 and 2, 9 indicating the forelegs of the forward support 2 of a cat, whereas 10 depicts the tail or rearward appendages of the animal extending from the rear support 3.

In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 there is portrayed an animal, in this case a dog, 11, having forward portions 12, rear ward portions 13, and a head portion 17. In this modification there is attached to the upper portion of the support 12 a casing 14; which is covered by a decorative ribbon 15 and which has fastened thereto a spring 16. Although the devices concerning the invention are herein limited to description. of a few members of the animal kingdom it is contemplated within the scope of this invention to include any and all animals.

It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made tothe details of construction. without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. In a device of the kind described, a pair of supports each composed of a sheetlilre material and parallel to one another, one; of said supports representing a distinctive portion of an animal character, the other of said supports representing another distinctive portion of such animal character, a bellows extending from one support to the other and representing the body portion of the animal character, and a sound producing device operatively associated with said bellows to function upon actuation of said bellows.

2. A combination figure toy and housing having two supports defining the rearward and forward portions of a four-legged animal character in standing position, the supports being composed of a sheet-like material and parallel to, one another, the rearward portion having lower extensions defining the rear legs of the animal character in standing position and the forward portion having lower extensions defining the front legs of the animal character in standing position, and a tubular housing extending from one support to the other and constituting a carrier for a sound producing device, one end of the housing being connected to one support. and the other end of the housing being connected to the other support and spaced from the supporting surface by the leg portions of said supports.

3. In a device of the kind described, a pair of supports, one of said supports representing a distinctive portion of an animate character, the other of said supports representing another distinctive portion of an animate character, a bellows having a collapsible tubular member, one end of said tubular member being connected, to one of said supports and the other end connected to the other of said supports, a spring for normally spacing said supports from one another and normally maintaining said tubular member in extendedv position. to form the body portion of the animate character, and a sound producing device operatively associated with. said bellows to function upon the actuation of said bellows.
