Description
Filed March 28, 1941 INV ENT OR. AH.
BY A4Aw;
Patented July 1, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFECE TOY BATTLE Irwin E. Cohn, Sterling, Mass.
Application March 28, 1941, Serial No. 385,639
3 Claims.
The object of the present invention is to provide a toy rattle which will produce a clear, belllike tone by means disposed within a ball-like portion of the rattle, the cost of manufacture being very low so that the rattle may be sold in the usual and chain outlets.
A rattle which will produce a clear, bell-like tone by means entirely concealed and capable of production at very low cost has long been sought by the trade. In some cases a bell like a small sleigh bell has been mounted on the handle or on some other exterior point. This, however, has not been feasible because of the fact that such elements are capable of being pulled away and being of small size have been swallowed by infants. It is, therefore, the primary object of the invention to so construct the rattle that the tone-producing device is concealed within the rattle itself and is so formed and mounted as to possess the required characteristics, all at a cost within the limits required.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is an elevation, partly broken away, taken on the line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectiontaken on the line 3--3, Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a vertical section through the toneproducing elements and the supporting members therefor.
Referring to the drawing, it Will be seen that the design comprises a ball-like head I, I .r mounted upon a handle, the head being composed of a lower semispherical member I and an upper semispherical member I :1: having a spread flange-like margin Icca: to fit over the margin of member I and which, when the device is finally assembled, will be adhered to member I by cement.
The two semispherical members may be made of blown Celluloid and one or both may be formed with apertures as at 2 for the passage of sound waves. It will be noted that the base of member I is flattened to receive a plastic nipple 3 apertured at its top to receive an eyelet 4 which may be of brass or any other suitable metal. At the top of nipple 3 and surrounding the eyelet is a washer 5 of felt or similar material.
Carried by eyelet 4 is a metallic cup 6 which may be a stamping of light gauge steel or suitable alloy, or other metal, if desired. This cup is apertured to receive the eyelet and the eyelet is headed over at its top upon the inner wall of the cup shown more particularly in Figure 4.
Within the sleeve-like center of eyelet 4 is pressed the lower stem-like member Ix of a post 8 which post may be of Celluloid or Wooden rod section and carried by the post is a fibre, cardboard or wood disk 9 held in place upon the post by adhesive or preferably by a headed stud I0.
Within the cup will be placed a striker such as ball I I, after which disk 9 is positioned followed by cementing or otherwise securing top semispherical member I-zc to the lower member I.
The handle member may be of any suitable form and applied in any suitable way. In the present embodiment ball member I carries a post I2 upon which is received one end of a piece of rubber tubing I3 which is fitted on one arm of a three-armed connecting member I4, the two remaining arms receiving the ends of a ringlike section I5 of rubber tubing.
By reason of the form in mounting of the tone-producing member, a clear bell-like tone is produced when the latter is used rather than the customary dull tone, and this adds a special attractiveness and sale value to the article.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A rattle comprising a handle and a hollow ball-like member carried by the handle and formed with two connected sections, a nipple carried by one ball member section, an eyelet carried by the nipple, a metallic cup having an axial aperture through which the eyelet passes for connection of the cup to the nipple, a striker within the cup, and means for confining the striker within the cup.
2. A rattle comprising a handle and a hollow ball-like member carried by the handle and formed with two connected sections, a nipple carried by one ball member section, an eyelet carried by the nipple, a metallic cup having an axial aperture through which the eyelet passes for connection of the cup to the nipple, a soft washer surrounding the eyelet and disposed between the cup and the nipple.
3. A rattle comprising a handle and a hollow ball-like member carried by the handle and formed with two connected sections, a nipple
