DOOR SEGURER.
APPLICATION FILED MAE.18, 1906.
a i wewiiow NTTE STATES Patented May 2, 1905.
PATENT Tries CHARLES E. EARI-IART AND FRANCIS M. EARHART, OF CHRISMAN, ILLINOIS.
I DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,011, dated. May 2, 1905.
Application filed March 18,1905- Serial No. 250,830-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. EARHART and FRANCIS M. EARHART, citizens of the United States, residing at Ohrisman, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
()ur invention relates to door-securers, and has for its object to provide a securer adapted for use upon any door and which may be conveniently transported.
A further object of our invention is to provide a door-securer which may be cheaply stamped from sheet metal and offer a great degree of resistance when locked in position.
W'ith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved door-securer shown in operative connection with a door. Fig. 2 is a view of our improved door-securer in side elevation. Fig. 3is a top plan view of our improved door-securer shown in operative connection with a door. Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of a plate which may be used to prevent the marring of the door-casing when our securer is to be regularly used. Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of the blank from which our improved door-securer is formed.
Like characters of referencedesignate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In its preferred embodiment our improved door-securer comprises a plate 1, provided at one end with outstanding teeth 2. At the end opposite the teeth the plate 1 is bent to form the angular portion 3, which is provided with gears 4:, disposed with their plane perpendicular to the plane of the angular por- Intermediate the ends lugs 5 are tion 3.
formed outstanding from the plate 1, and a slot 6 is provided transversely of the plate 1 and between the lugs 5. A latch 7 is pivotally secured to the ears 4 by a pin 8 passing through the said ears t and through the offset portion 9 of the latch. The latch 7 carries at its end opposite the offset portion 9 a cross-head 10, proportioned and disposed to pass through the slot 6 with a portion of the said cross-head upon each side of the plate 1. A plate 11 is provided pivotally secured to the plate 1, as by the rivet 12. The plate 11 is provided with a slot 13 so proportioned and disposed that when the plate 11 is rotated adjacent to and parallel with the plate 1 the slot 13 will register with the slot 6 and the crosshead 10 will pass through both of said slots. In cases where our improved door-securer is to be continually used a plate 14 may be secured to the door-jamb in any convenient manner, as by screws passing through the holes 15. The plate 14 is provided with a transversely-disposed slot 16, adapted and disposed to receive the teeth 2 of the plate 1.
The operation of our improved door-securer is as follows: The plate 1 is inserted between the outer edge of a door and the doorjamb with the lugs 5 contacting with the jamb. By forcing the door to its extreme closed position the teeth 2 are forced into the jamb. If the securer is to be continuously used, the plate 14: is secured to the jamb and the teeth 2 are placed within the slot 16 instead of being forced into the material of the jamb. When the door has been closed and the teeth 2 firmly seated, the latch 7 is closed by passing the cross-head 10 through the slot 6, in which position it abuts the jamb and the door, thereby preventing the opening of the door. In case the space between the door and the jamb is so great that the teeth 2 do not hold firmly in the jamb the plate 11 is rotated upon the rivet 12 until the slots 6 and 13 register, when the plate 1 and its adjacent plate 11 are inserted between the door and the jamb and the latch closed, as before described.
While we have shown and. described our preferred embodiment, we do not limit ourselves to the construction and arrangement so shown and described, but reserve the privilege of making such minor changes in the form, construction, and assembling as maybe within the scope of our claims.
pendicular to the plane thereof, a latch having an oifset portion hinged to the ears and provided with an angularly-disposed portion arranged to pass through the slot and extend upon both sides of the plate and lugs formed upon the edges of the plate and bent at right angles thereto adjacent the slot.
