Description

(No Model.)
S. D. ASHMORE.
DOOR OHEGK.
No, 431,310. Patented July 1, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL D. ASHMORE, OF GIRARD, KANSAS.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,310, dated July 1, 1890.
Application filed 'Eebruarylfi, 1890. Serial No. 340,552. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. ASHMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Door- Stop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to door-stops, whereby the door may be maintained at any point of its opening.
The objects and advantages of the invention, together with the novel features thereof, will hereinafter appear, and be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a door-casing, its door, and a stop constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective of the stop detached. Fig. 3 is a detail in transverse vertical section of the adjusting-box.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
- The door-jamb 1 and door 2 are of the usual construction, and the latter is hinged to the former, as at 3, in the ordinary manner. The upper bar of the jamb 1 has secured thereto the triangular bracket 4, the rear end of which is provided with a securing-plate 5, through which is inserted screws 6, passing into the j amb and serving to hold the bracket securely in position.
8 represents a hollow metal box provided at its rear sides with lateral securing-lugs 9, through which are passed screws 10, taking into the front face of the door near its upper edge. Verticallyopposite bearings 11 are formed in the upper and lower walls of the box, and mounted for movement in the same is a rod 12, the upper portion of which is cylindrical, as at 13, and is mounted for movement in a slot 14, formed longitudinally in an arm 15, the rearend of the arm being pivoted to the bracket 4, as at 16. Above the arm the rod is provided with a disk or clampinghead 17, and below its cylindrical portion is provided with a central squared portion 18, which corresponds in shape to the upper-bearing opening, and hence is prevented from turning or rotating within the opening, and yet permitted to have longitudinal movement therein. The lower end of the rod depends considerably below the boX and is cylindrical, as at 20, and inclosing the same is a bindingsleeve 21, below which there is threaded on the end of the rod a thumb-nut 22. A spring 23 encircles the rod and has its upper terminal connected thereto, the lower terminal resting upon the bottom of the box, said spring serving to normally force the rod upward, so that the clamping-disk at the upperend of the same will not exert pressure upon the slotted arm, and thereby offer resistance to a perfectly-easy operation of the door when not desired.
It is apparent that by rotating the screw upon the rod to the right the binding-sleeve, coming against the under portion of the bottom of the box, will serve to draw the rod downward and bind its clamping-disk upon the slotted arm. By this means the door may be stopped or checked at any point and against any accidental closing.
When it is desired that the door shall operate in the usual manner, the set-nut or burr is simply rotated to the left, and the coiled spring mounted within the box serves to elevate the rod slightly, and thus remove the binding or clamping head or disk from contact with the slotted arm.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with the bracket 4, connected to the jamb, the hollow box 9, secured to the door, the adjustable rod 12, having an upper plain portion and a lower threaded portion mounted for vertical reciprocation in the box and terminating at one end in a clamping-head and provided at its other end with a binding-nut, and an arm 15, pivoted to the bracket and having a slot for the reception of the rod and adapted to be bound by the clamping-head, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the bracket 4, 0011* nected to the jamb, the hollow box 9, secured to the door, the adjustable rod 12, having a plain body portion adapted for vertical reciprocation in thebox and terminating at one end in a clamping-head, provided at its other end with a binding-nut, and provided between its ends with a squared body portion fitting a similar opening in the box, a coiled spring mounted within the box around the rod and my own I have hereto affixed my signature in acting to normally elevate the same, and an presence of two Witnesses. arm 15, pivoted to the bracket and having a slot for the reception of the rod and adapted SAMUEL D. ASI-IMORE. 5 to be bound by the clamping-head, substan- WVitnesses:
tiaiiy as specified. O. H. PHILLIPS,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as C. M. CURTIS.
