OUNINGHAM DRAKE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SH UTTER- FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent; No. 305,681., dated September 28, 1884.
Application filed May 2. 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, OUNINGI-IAM DRAKE, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented oer tain new and useful Improvementsin Shutter- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my imthis bolt is hinged, between the lips D 1), the
button G, which consists of a curved piece of metal the free or inner end ofwhich is weighted, as shown at H. This weighted part H rests upon the outer end of arm 0 when the device is in operation, thereby locking the shutter between plate A and the hinged button G. If desired, the button may be provided with a downward-projecting finger-piece,as shown at I, for operating it either in opening or closing the shutter.
The use of this device will readily be understood from the foregoing descriptiomtaken proved shutter-fastener. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view, and Fig. 4'is a perspective view, illustrating the operation of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to devices for retaining outside shutters or window'blinds in their open position; and it consists in the de tailed construction of a device of that class,as will be hereinafterinore fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes a plate of any suitable metal ,having screw-holes B for the insertion of screws or nails, whereby theplate may be fastened to the wall of a building.
Fastened upon and projecting at right angles from the plate A is an arm, 0, the outer end of which is bifurcated to form lips I), the free ends of which are bent to form sleeves E for the insertion of the hinge-bolt 1 Upon ther explanation. It will be seen that it can ready and handy for use, and can easily be manipulated by a person standing in the open window.
Havingthus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The improved shutter-fastener herein shown and described, the same consisting of the fastening-pl ate A and horizontally-proj ecting arm 0, having lips D at its outer end, in combination with the weighted button G, adapted to rest with its weighted free end upon the outer end of the arm,as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CUNINGHAM DRAKE.
