UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WARREN TANNER AND THEODORE 'W. BURCH, OF FREMONT, MICHI- GAN, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO JOSEPH GERBER, OF SAME PLACE.
DOO R- FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,817, dated September 20, 1892.
Application filed December 1 8, 1891. Serial No. 415, 544. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM WARREN TANNER and THEODORE W. BURCH, citizens of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Doors; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improved fastening for the doors of commodes and other like articles of furniture; and its object is to furnish such fastenings that shall be cheap,
easily applied, and having certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a broken portion of a door and easing with our fastening attached; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a side view of the inner knob; Fig. 4, an end view of the same; Fig. 5, aside view, and Fig. 6 an end view, of the outer knob.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents a portion of any door to be secured; B a portion of the casing adjacent to the free side of the same.
C represents a knob, of wood or other suitable material, which may be of any suitable shape or size and is provided with an opening F in its axis closed at its outer end and open at its inner end and adapted to fit the stem G of the inner knob D, the rounded side of which is adapted and located to engage the concave inner side of ablock I when the door is closed, and thus secure the same. Said block is secured to the jamb J of the casing in proper place to engage the knobD and has a rounded inclined outer side with which one side of said knob engages and springs aside to permit the door to close. To permit onehalf of said knob to thus spring aside, it is divided longitudinally into two parts by a saw-kerf E,.which extends a short distance into the stem G. A portion of this stem adjacent to the knob D is larger than the balance, and is shouldered at K to engage the inner side of the door and locate the knob D a proper distance from the door to afford room for the block I. Said stem is inserted through 5 an ordinary round opening properly located in the door, and is secured in place by a nail or other suitable pin H, driven in at the edge of the door and transversely through said stem. The outer knob C is secured upon the stem C by glue or any other convenient means.
What we claim is- 1. In combination with a door, a casing and a projection on said casing, and an axially-divided knob attached to said door and engag- 6 5 ing said projection, substantially as described.
2. In a door-fastening, a knob on the door engaging a fixed projecting block on the jamb, said knob being axially divided and having a stem passing through the door, and an outer 7o knob secured to said stem, substantially as described.
3. Thecombination, withadooranditscasing or jamb, of a block having a concave rear and an inclined frontside, an axially-divided knob 7 5 engaging said block having a stem passing through said door, a pin inserted in said door and passing transversely through said stem, and a knob having an axial opening to receive the outer end of said stem and secured 8a to the same, substantially as described.
4. As an article of manufacture, an improved door-fastening consisting of an axiallydivided knob having a shouldered stem and a knob having an axial opening fitting said 8 stem, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM WARREN TANNER. THEODORE W. BURCH.
