. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOEL ARMSTRONG, OF MARYSVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO DAVID F. MOKITRIGK.
DOOR-SECURER.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,712, dated May 18, 1880.
Application filed October 28, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OEL ARMSTRONG, of Marysville, in the county of Union and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference 'being had to the accompanying drawings, and
- use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my fastener, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section'thereof.
The body of my door-securer consists of a] fiat bar, A, having at one end two or more sharpened claws, a a, standing at right angles thereto. The other end of the bar A is doubled and forms a flat spring, B, of the same length as the bar and on the side opposite to the claws. The bar A and spring B are welded together from the bend for a suitable distance, and an elongated slot, 71, is made through each in such a manner that at one end of said slot the metal will be virtually in one piece and form a V- shaped or rounded edge, d. V
Instead of making the bar A and spring B of one piece, as above described, they may be made of separate pieces and welded together at one end in the same manner.
0 represents a latch, made substantially in the form shown, and having at one end a seat, 8, to fit over the edge (1 and allow the latch to turn thereon. The other end of the latch O is extended, forming a head, D, upon the outer face of which is a shoulder or offset, i.
The latch O is inserted in the slot b of the bar A, a spring, F, fastened to the outer end of 5 when required.
The bar A is placed against the door-casing sufficiently far to allow the latch to'clear the same. In closing the door the edge of the door will press back the latch, and, acting upon the spring B, press the claws into the casing.
When the door is closed it is clear of the latch, and the spring F throws the latch forward in front of the door, so that the same cannot be opened from the outside.
The spring B adapts the device to doors where there is more than ordinary space between the door and casing, while it forms no impediment to its use where such space is small.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1'. In a door-securer, the removable vibrating latch 0, having its rear end formed with seat 8 and its face with offset t, substantially as herein described.
2. The latch 0, formed with the seat 8, and
head 1), having shoulder or offset 41, in combination with the slotted body A B and spring F, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. t
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOEL ARMSTRONG.
