Description

C. KINNEY.
DOOR-FASTENER. No.178,Z4Z Patented June 6,1876.
T we;
WITNEEQ E5 N PETERS. PHOTO-UTHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON, D c,
UNITED STATES CYRUS KINNEY, OF INGERSOLL, -GANADA.
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,242, dated June 6, 1876; application filed April 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS KINNEY, of the town of Ingersoll, in the county of Oxford, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Door-Fasteners; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where Figure l is a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of same.
My invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement 'of a holder, flexible spring, and locking-catch, constituting a device for holding doors, when closed, and looking the same when required, the object being to provide a door-fastener of simpler and cheaper form of construction than the ordinary lock. It is intended to be applied to doors which are seldom required to be locked.
A is the door, and B the jamb. On the inner side of the striking face of the latterI attach the holder G, which is a short cylinder, constructed of metal or other suitable mate rial, and shaped substantially as shown. D is a metal spring, usually formed of flat steel, and connected at one end to side of holder and attached to the face of door-jamb. When the door is open the spring carries the holder rigidly outward from the jamb. As the door is closed it presses against the holder, and causes it to recede into a recess formed in the jamb for that purpose, and the spring afterward flies back and holds the door by back the holder, and frees itself. F is a locking catch or key, constructed of metal, substantially as shown, and moving freely on the screw to, by which it is attached to the door.
In Fig. 1 this is shown closed-that is, with its projecting head I) pressing into a recess in side of holder, and holdingthe latter rigidly in place. The door in this case is firmly locked,
and cannot be opened until the catch is turned upward or downward, away from the holder.
The result of this is that all the advantages 0 of locks are retained without expense, or danger of getting out of order, or losing the keys.
I claim as my invention 1. As an improvement in door-fasteners,
the holder (J, having a spring, D, attached to the face of the jamb, and connected at one end to side of the holder, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the holder 0 and spring D, the locking-catch F, constructed, ar-
ranged, and operating substantially as shown and described, for the purposes specified.
