Description

Sept. 6, 1955 c. R. PATTERSON 2,717,168
COMBINATION DOOR HANDLE AND LATCH Filed Sept. 6, 1951 5J 40c mfoz 6. 1L. Patterson I I I'l United States Patent COMBINATION DOOR HANDLE AND LATCH Cecil R. Patterson, Rivera, Calif. Application September 6, 1951, Serial No. 245,310
1 Claim. (Cl. 29270) This invention relates to handle construction designed primarily for use in connection with keeper doors or the like, the primary object of the invention being to provide a handle including a single securing bolt by means of which the handle is secured to a door, the bolt being so constructed that it also provides a support for the door catch forming a part thereof, the catch normally holding the door closed.
An important object of the invention is to provide a combined door handle and catch of the type wherein the door is held closed by frictional contact of the catch with the walls of the keeper opening formed in the door frame or shelf adjacent to the catch.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a door catch in the form of a yieldable plug which is s constructed and arranged that the handle securing bolt extends therethrough and may be operated to expand the yieldable material of which the plug is formed, to insure a binding fit between the plug and opening, when the plug becomes worn, thereby providing a catch which may be easily adjusted for wear.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed o 't in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure l is an elevational view illustrating a combination door handle and door catch mounted on a door.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail the reference character 5 indicates the door of a cupboard to which the handle forming the subject matter of the present invention is secured.
The handle comprises a tubular internally threaded shank 6 formed with an enlarged end 7 curved to conformto the curvature of the handle section 8, where it is Welded or otherwise secured thereto. As shown, the handle section 8 is formed in the arc of a circle, as clearly shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing, the ends of the handle section being formed to provide spurs 9 that embed themselves in the surface of the door with which the handle is used, to hold the handle against rotation when the handle is pulled in opening the door.
The length of the shank 6 is such that it is disposed in a line with the ends of the handle proper, or at a point where the spurs merge into the handle, so that the inner end of the shank 6 rests against the outer surface of the door 5 when the handle has been properly positioned. thereby bracing the handle to prevent bending of the handle underexcessive strains directed thereto in pushing the door closed.
The reference character 10 indicates the securing bolt of the handle which has a threaded end disposed in the threaded shank 6, the bolt 10 having the head 11 formed to receive a screw driver for rotating the bolt to properly position the bolt within the tubular shank 6.
Mounted on the bolt 10 adjacent to the head 11, in the plug 12 which is constructed of yieldable material such as rubber, the mounting of the plug 12 being such that when the bolt 10 is rotated in one direction, the head 11 will insure pressure on the plug, expanding the plug to enlarge the circumference thereof.
The plug 12 provides the major portion of the door catch, and is designed to fit within the keeper opening 13 formed in the forward edge of a shelf within the cupboard and with which the door and catch are used. Positioned over the open end of the keeper opening 13 is the metal wear plate 14 which is provided with an extension 15 that extends into the keeper opening 13 reducing wear between the wall of the keeper opening and the plug 12.
As shown, the wear plate 14 is formed with an outer flange 16 that rests against the outer edge of the shelf, which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character 17.
It will of course, be understood that this metal wear 8 and set up friction between the plug and keeper opening, I
sufiicient to hold the door closed under normal conditions.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a combined door handle and door catch wherein only one bolt is used in securing the door handle and door catch in position on a door, the bolt also acting as an adjusting means for adjusting the catch for wear.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed A door latch for attachment to a door opposite to one edge of a stationary support having a keeper opening formed with a straight wall against which the door abuts, comprising a body adapted to serve as a handle secured to one side of a door, a tubular internally threaded shank extending laterally from the central portion of said body, said door having an opening registering with the internally threaded shank, a bolt having a head on one of its ends, extending through the door and secured in said threaded shank, a tapered plug constructed of yieldable material fitted on the bolt, engaging the other side of said door adjacent to said opening, the head of the bolt compressing and expanding said plug as said bolt is threaded into the internally threaded shank, and said plug adapted to move into said keeper opening frictionally contacting the straight wall thereof, securing the door closed.
