Description

NTE STATES PATENT CFFICE.;
WELLINGTON C. WEN DELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED FASTENINGS AND EUFFERS FIIR IIHS AND SHUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,379, dated June 27, 1871.
To all 107mm t may concern:
Be it known that I, 'ELLINGTON U. VVEN- DELL, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Door and Shutter-Fastening and Buffer-Cushion combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a section takenhorizontally through adoor and door-framein the plane of the improved fastening and buffers.- Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views of the fastenings and buffers. Fig. tis an end view thereof'.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g-parts in the several figures.
In the drawing I have represented the fastening applied for holding a door or shut-ter closed, but the main object and design of my invention is to hold doors or shutters open 5 and when thus used the rubber block will be applied to the wall or base board and the socket to the opposite side of the door to that shown. The nature of my invent-ion consists in the combination, with a socketed block, I), of an India-rubber block, a', combined by a central adjustable fastening.
The following is a description of my improved fastening and buffer-cushion combined.
In the accompanying drawing, c represents a block of India rubber of a spherical form and having a hole diametrically through it. Through this block is passed a screw, c, by means of which it is secured in proper position for use. The drawing, Fig. l, represents the block ct secured to a door-frame, A, with cupped washer d applied as a bearing for this block. At a proper point with respect to the position of the block c a hole is bored into the door B, and a socketed block, b, is driven therein, as shown in Fig. 1. This block b is bored out to receive the rubber c when the door B is in the position as shown. The block b is bored out so that it is'larger interiorly than it is at the marginal entrancet' t', thereby allowlowing the rubber' block to expand and obtain a hold upon the walls of the socket after it has been crowded through said entrance, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A hole, h, is also bored through the block b, or to a depth sufficient to receive the head of the screw c which retains the rubber block a, by which it (a) acts as a buffer or cushion, striking against the bottom of the recessed block b. and eft'ectually preventing the door B from striking violently against the door-frame A or wall of the room.
It will be seen from the above description that the India-rubber ball a is confined in place to the door-frame A by means of a screw which passes through the center of the block and serves as a means for expanding the block, as shown in Fig. 3, when it becomes too small for the chamber behind the contracted entrance 'L' in the socketed block I) or, if the block a. should be tool-arge to enter its socket freely, the screw c can be partially withdrawn, so as to allow the rubber block to contract to the proper diameter. Instead of using a screw, I shall use for outside fastenings a headed nail or spike.
My invention is not only applicable to doors but it will be found very useful for holding windowshutters open.
I am aware that a socket with a perforated rubber diaphragm has been used before my invention for holding doors and shutters open; but I am not aware that there has ever been usedbe fore my invention, a rubber block fitting into a socket for this purpose; nor such a block provided with means for adjusting it to the socket so as to provide for wear, and also to make the fastenings hold more or less firmly, as maybe required.
The utility 'of my invention lies in its exceeding cheapness and simplicity, and the great convenience with which either a door or shutter may be retained open and released again from closing.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with a socketedbloek, b, of an India-rubber block, c', confined by a central adjustable fastening, the same being for fastening or holding doors and shutters, substantially as described.
WELLINGTON C. WENDELL.
