Description

non seta ANDREW A. VEEE, 'or DELAWARE, onto.
Letters Patent No. 109,692, dated November 29, 1870.
lMPOVEMENT IN BUFFERS AND CATCHES FOR DOORS.
The Schedulerefen-ed to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that'I, ANDREW A. Venn, of Delaware, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buffer and Catch7 for Doors; land I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had'to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved buler and catch.
Figure 2 represents a plan or top view of the same.
. The object of my invention is to provide asimple, cheap, and efficient device, capable of general application and use, for the purpose of stopping a door when opened, and. of holding the same in a xed position, as is hereinafter morefully explained. l
In the accompanying drawing- A denotes a base-plate, which is constructed with two anges, a a, between which the metal spring B is secured by rivet O, as represented in the drawing.
D denotes the bul'er-head, to which the tongue E is made fast, and the latter ts into the recess formed by anges a a upon the edges of base-plate A. v
A central longitudinal slot, s, is formed lin tongue E, and a hole for the screw s is made through the base-plate A. l
The face of the bu`er-head D is recessed, having beveled or dovetailed lateral lips, as seen in lig. 2, at
fi i.
H denotes a block of India rubber, which fits into and is securely held in the dovetailed recess in the face of the bulTer-head-D.'
The India-rubber buffer-block H has a convex face, which projects in front ofvthe lips of the bufferhead, for the purpose of stopping the door which will be opened against it. Y
It will be seen, from theiibregoing description, that the space between theen'da; of the spring catch B and the buffer-block H may be enlarged or diminished by loosening the screw s', (which passes through the slot of the tongue,) and sliding the buer-head, with its tongue E, in either direction within the recess of the base-plate A, the slot sin the tongue being formed for such an adjustment.
My buffer and vcatch will be secured, by means of' adj usting-screw s, to the door of a room, and usually near a wall against Which the door would strike in opening it; and, as the bottoni of the door passes over the spring catch B, the spring will be depressed, and,
when the door strikes'the butfer-block H, the move'- ment will be stopped, and the spring B, which was depressed while the' door passed overit, will rise up orretract, and retain thedoor between the end a; ofthe spring B and the face of the buer-block H.
The adjustment of the buffer-head and its tongue in the 4base-plate will enable my buer and catch vto be readily used to stop and hold doors of various thicknesses.
Toclose a door held by my device,- the spring may I be depressed by the fobt of a person.
1t is obvious that either metal or wood may be used for the spring; also, that a hinged metal latch might be substituted for thel spring B, provided a spiral' or rubber spring were placed beneath it.
Other slight modifications of my structure might be employed without depart-ing from the principle of my invention.
I propose toconstrnct my base-plate, buffer-head, and tongue of either malleable or wrought-iron or other metal.
Having lfully described my improved door-buffer vand catch.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The adjustable buffer-head D, or its equivalent, provided with a buffer-block, in combination with a base-plate and a catch, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of August, A. D. 1870.
A. AfVEER.
Witnesses;
J. J. GLovER, RoB'r. HURLY.
