Description

UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD C. WEMPLE, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
. IMPROVEMENT IN" DOOR-STOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 109,281, dated November 15, 1870.
To alll whom it may concern: f
Beit known that I, LEONARD C. WEMPLE,
of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and4 Stateof Illinois, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Stops; and I do hereby Ideclare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in thel art to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a detail horizontal section of my improved door-stop, taken through the line a: fr, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding` parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for stopping a door when it is swung open before it may strike the Wall, and which will hold the door open, and thus prevent it from slamming and swinging shut accidentally; and it consists in the construction and combination ofthe various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a cupshaped block, which is designed to be secured to the base-board of the wall by two screws, passing through two holes, a', in the said block A, as shown in Figs. l and 2. By elongatiug the holes c into short slots, as shown in Fig. 2, the position of the block A may be adjusted to bring it into exactly the required position or to compensate for the sagging or shrinking of the door.
B is a projection or knob, made of cork, rubber, or other suitable material, for the door to strike against when it is swung open, to stop it without the jar or noise that would be unavoidable should the door strike the wall or an unyielding stop. The knob or projection B is attached to the face of the block or, cup A by a screw or other suitable means.
To the face of the block or cup A, or to lugs formed upon said face, is pivoted a catch, C, to the rearwardly-projecting arm c of which is attached, or upon it is formed, a curved arm, D, which projects through a hole in the face of the said block or cup A, and has a spring, E, coiled around it, one end of which rests against the face of the block or cup A, and its other end rests against the catch O. The forward end or catch, c2, of the said catch O is beveled off or inclined, as shown in Fig. l, so that the said catch C may be pushed back by the edge of the door as it is swung open. The spring E at once forces the said catch forward into a notch formed in the edge of the door to receive it to hold the door open. The catch O is withdrawn, to allow the door to be closed, by pressing upon its projecting arm c'.
Into the part of the edge of the door that strikes the arm c2 of the catch O is driven a square staple, F, as shown in Fig. 1, to prevent the door from being Worn or injured by the action ofthe said catch.
Having thusdcscribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An improved door-stop, consisting ofthe block or cup A a', catch G c c2,.arm D, spring E, and projection or knob B, said parts being arranged and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the staple F with the block or cup A a', catch C c c2, arm D, spring E, and projection or knob B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
LEONARD c. WEMPLE.
Witnesses: W. RUSH LEE, G. C. GEAEN.
