To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Hownnn H. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and improved Door- Holding Device, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, disclosing fully and completely a practical embodiment of my invention, such that those skilled in the art to which it appertains may understand and practise the invention.
My invention is of particular utility in connection with doors or like devices which are hingedly connected to frames or casings and which may be moved to either close the opening made and in which the frame or casing is positioned, or opened to allow passage therethrough. Ordinarily, the door or similar device swings freely on its hinges, and is liable to have more or less aimless movement to different positions, or is subject to outside influences which though of slight force, cause the door to swing on its hinges to differentpositions. This, frequently is a matter of annoyance and discomfort.
it is the purpose and object of my invention, primarily, to provide a means which may be applied to a door or other device similar in use and structure to hold the door frictionally, in any position desired, said means not positively locking the door at a certain position, but frictionally securing it against usual and ordinary forces tending to move it, while at the same time leaving it subject to movement by the application of extra force, said means being of universal application to doors of different sizes, and having provision to vary the holding power of the means with which it may secure a door against movement.
A further object is to provide a means of this character which may be built in as a part of a hinge, or which may be applied independently of the hinge carrying the door, the construction when built into the hinge having provision to eliminate any rattling or similar undesirable noise.
A still further object is to provide this means referred to with an element which takes up and cares for the ordinary wear to which the device is subject.
These various objects and purposes, together with others not specifically enumerated, will be apparent as the description of the structures shown in the drawings progresses, the constructions there shown being improvements on those outlined in my former application, Serial No. 688,261, filed April 3, 1912, and matured into Patent No. 1,055,999, dated March 18, 1913.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a door and its frame or casing with one of my door holding devices applied thereto, said device built into the hinge structure carrying the door. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line a-a, 1 and looking down on the door holder. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of the form of door holding device independent of the hinge. Fig. 4c is a partial sectional plan view of the device shown in F 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are elevations of the hinge leaves used in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the leaves being separated. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the locking cylinder used in Figs. 1. and 2, and of the set screw attachment thereof to the hinge leaves. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the gripping lever used with both modifications. Figs. 9 and 10 are perspective views of the main members used in the device shown in Figs. 3 and 1.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
In the illustration of my invention l have shown it applied to a door and its frame the door being shown at 1 and a portion of the door casing at 2. The door holder in Figs. 1 and 2 is shown as applied to one of the hinges by which the door is mounted, preferably the upper one so that the device is within easy reach without steeping over to operate it. The hinge is of the ordinary leaf type consisting of sections 3 and 41, the section or leaf 3 being provided with pintle receiving projections 5 and 6 spaced apart a considerable distance, while the sec tion or leaf 4 has similar pintle receiving projections 7 and 8 still farther apart and between which the projections and 6 are adapted to lie with all of the projections in alinement to thereby receive the pintle D which extends theretlnrough. The ends of the projections 5 and 6 nearest to each other are provided with confronting notches 10 and 11, in which are seated lugs 12 and 13 projecting from the ends of a cylindrical member 14 and integral therewith. Said cylindrical member has a longitudinal bore to receive the pintle 9, and with its end projections or lugs 12 and 13 seated in the notches 10 and 11, it becomes in effect a part of the leaf 3, and this is further effected by threading the lugs 12 and 13 on their sides for a portion of their length and correspondingly threading the sides of the recesses 10 and 11 adjacent the tl readed lugs so as to receive setscrews 15, which secure the cylindrical member 14: firmly to the proj ections 5 and 6 and prevent any loose movement of said cylindrical member or objectionable rattling in the operation of the hinge or door holding device. By this construction a complete hinge is produced, ti e leaves 3 and at thereof having connection respectively to the door and its frame by screws in the usual manner.
Leaf 3 is cut away opposite the cylindrical member 14- leaving considerable space between the body of the leaf and said member, while leaf at adjacent the cylindrical. member is provided with a concaved lip, having substantially the same curvature as the member 1% and extending partially over the surface thereof. As shown in Fig. 2, this lip 16 may be integral with the leaf at,
. or it may be separate from and attached thereto by any suitable means. Partly surrounding the cylindrical member 14 and extending through the space between it and theleaf 3 is a resilient element 17 having one end secured on the outer surface of the lip 16 by any suitable securing means, the opposite end thereof passing partially around a head 18 carried on the end of a lever 19 and being fastened securely to said head as indicated. The head is of a length substantially equal to that of member 1% and is provided on its inner face with a concaved surface of a curvature similar to that of member 14 so as to conform thereto. The end of the lever 19 lies some distance from the pintle and cylindrical member, and near this end the lever is pierced to provide a slot 20 through which passes athreaded pin 21 which has passage through a plate 22 attached to the face of the door, a hole 23 being bored in the door a distance to allow the insertion of the pin. The threaded engagement of pin 21 with the plate 22 allows adjustment of these parts relative to each other, and when they have been placed in any desired adjustment, they may be secured therein by means of the locking nut 2d threaded on the pin and adapted to be turned into engagement with the plate 22, the nut 24. having a thumb engaging handle to afford easy manipulation thereof.
Pin 21 extends through the slot 20 and its end has pivotal attachment to a cam having an operating arm 26. The shape of the cam is such that with the arm in one position, that shown in Figs. 2 and i, the lever 19 is spaced some distance from the door face, but with operation of the arm to other positions the lever will be forced toward the door thereby drawing the resilient member 17 against the cylinder 1%; while by releasing the cam, the resilient element will also be released, and the member 14 may have free movement so far as the resilient member is concerned. As a means of taking up wear, lessening noise, and otherwise making the device more practicable, l have shown the cylindrical member 14 as surrounded by a fiber washer 27, it lying be tween said cylindrical member, the resilient element and the concaved faces of parts 16 and 18.
With the construction so far described in mind it will be evident that I have provided a door holder which can be manually operated to retain the door in any position desired, the pressure of the resilient member when the arm 26 is operated serving to frictionally hold the cylindrical member 14: from movement, and through its connection with the hinge leaf 3, thus holding the door. The set-screw provision by which the cylindrical member is secured to the leaf 3 eliminates any lost motion and prevents any undue noise in operation; the fiber washer insures noiseless operation and takes up any wear due to friction, and the adjustment of the lever toward and from the door due to the threaded connection of pin 21 in plate 22, permits the pressure to be varied to suit different sizes and types of doors making the device universally applicable to all doors, as well as providing a means to vary the holding pressure on any particular door to which the device may be attached. Then the resilient member is released the door will swing freely and when it is operated to bear against the cylindrical member, it holds the door against all ordinary forces tending to swing it but at the same time does not so positively lock it that it can not be moved by the exertion of greater than the usual and ordinary forces that normally have to do with it.
The construction heretofore described is built as a part of one of the hinges, but my invention is not limited to such structure. It can be applied to any door already mounted by use of the modified structure shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Such structure comprises a leaf 28 having spaced apart ears 29 between which is mounted a cylindrical member 30, a second leaf member 31 having at one end a lip 32 concaved on its inner face, a resilient element, fiber washer, a
lever with a head having an inner concaved face, the end of which has connection to the door the same as in the previously outlined structure and which is adjustable by cam movement in a similar manner. Leaf 28 is embedded in the door frame the same as leaf 3 while leaf 31 is embedded in the door the same as leaf 4: in the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The resilient element is attached at one end to the lip 32, passes around cylinder 80 and has attachment at the other end to the head of lever 19. It will be clear from this construction that operation of the cam will tighten the resilient element and serve to pinch the fiber washer and cylinder 30, thereby frictionally holding the leaves in fixed relation, and as the door must move with leaf 31, its fixed positioning is sured.
The device preferably, will be attached near the upper hinge, though it is not necessary that it be applied at any particular place on the door.
I have fully described my invention and indicated one place where it will be par ticularly useful. It, of course is not limited in use to doors but without material modification, may be employed on similar structures, such as gates, hinges screens, transoms and like devices.
Various modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from ,the invention. The disclosure, accordingly, is to be considered as diagrammatic and illustrative merely and not in any sense as limiting the invention to anyparticular specific structure. I therefore consider myself as entitled to all modifications falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a leaf member having at one end thereof a lip formed with a con caved portion, a second leaf member having a cylindrical member, a lever having a concaved portion, a resilient member attached to the lip passing around the cylindrical member and having attachment to the lever whereby the concaved portions of the lip and lever have bearing engagement with the cylindrical member, a double means of adjustment for the lever to draw the lip, cylindrical member and lever together, and a single means for operating either adjusting means.
In combination, a casing, a door mounted for swinging movement on the casing, means to retain the door in. position with re spect to the casing comprising leaf members attached to the door and casing and pivotally secured. together, a cylindrical member forming a portion of one leaf memher and located at their pivotal connection, a head formed on the other leaf member and having a concaved surface bearing against the cylindrical member, a resilient member attached to the head opposite the concaved surface and passing around the cylindrical member, a lever with which the resilient member has attachment lying substantially parallel to the door and having attachment thereto, a threaded plate secured to the door,
a pin passing through the lever and threaded into the plate and means secured to the outer end of the pin and bearing against the lever whereby the pin may be turned to operate the lever toward the door and draw the engaging parts of the leaf members together.
3. In combination, a casing, a swinging member hingedly mounted on the casing, a device attached to the casing and swinging member comprising leaf members pivotally secured together, a cylindrical member associated with the leaf members at their pivotal connection, a resilient member attached to one leaf member and passing around the cylindrical member, a lever normally lying substantially parallel to the swinging memher and having attachment to the resilient member, whereby operation of the lever toward the swinging member serves to bind the resilient member against the cylindrical member, and means to adjust the lever toward and from the swinging member comprising a threaded pin passing through the lever and having engagement with a threaded member, secured to the swinging member, said pin having attached at its outer end a cam lever bearing against the lever and adapted to turn the pin in the threaded member or operate the lever toward the swinging member by movement of the cam lever with reference to the pin.

In combination, a casing, a door mounted for swinging movement on the casing, means to retain the door in position with respect to the casing comprising leaf members attached to the door and casing and pivotally secured together, a cylindrical member forming a portion of one leaf member and located at their pivotal connection, a head formed on the other leaf member and having a concaved surface bearing against the cylindrical member, a resilient member attached to the head and passing around the cylindrical member, a lever with which the resilient member has attachment lying substantially parallel to the door and having attachment to the door, a threaded plate secured to the door. a pin passing through the lever and threaded into the plate, and a cam lever pivotally attached to the outer end of the pin and operating to adjust the lever toward the door either by turning the pin in the plate or by pivotal movement with respect to the plate.
