UNITED STATES MATENT FFICE.
ROBERT OEHRING, OF MEADOV GROVE, NEBRASKA.
DOOR-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,181, dated October 3, 1899. Application filed March 1, 1899. Serial No. 707,358. (No modelo To all 1071/0711/ it may concern:
Re it known'that I, ROBERT OEHRING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meadow Grove, in the county of Madison and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to door-fasteners; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive fasi tener of this character which may be conveniently carried in the vest-pocket and which may be quickly assembled and applied to a door and its jamb for the purpose of holding the former locked against entrance from without.
In the drawings, Figure l is a fragmentary sectional view through a door-casing, jamb, and door. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device removed from the door, showing the parts in the position they assume when the fastener is applied. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the position the parts assume when the fastener is carried in the pocket.
In the drawings, l denotes the base of the fastener, one end of which is formed with a recess 2 and with an inwardly-projecting embedding-prong 3, which is adapted to be embedded in the door-jamb, as shown in Fig. l.
4 denotes the stop member, the inner end of which is provided with an enlarged head 5, which is adapted to abut against the door and hold it closed. The body portion of the stop member is provided with an elongated slot 6, through which projects a set-screw 7, which engages a screw-threaded aperture 8 of the base member l, whereby an adjustment of the stop member is permitted to accommodate doors of different thicknesses. The stop member is also provided with an aperture 9, so that when the fastener is not in use the setscrews may be removed from the aperture 6 of the stop member and engaged with the aperture 9 of said member and the aperture 8 of the base member. In this position it will be noticed that the stop-head lies in the recess `2 and abuts with its beveled face against the beveled face of the prong 3, thus forming practically a smooth joint and presentin gno sharp edges'or points which would be apt to tear or damage the pocket. 4
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
The device is exceedingly simple, may be made at small cost, and will be found particuL larly useful for travelers.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured byLetters Patent, is-
. A door-fastener consisting of two members, one of which is provided with a recessed end terminating in an inwardly-projecting prong, said member being formed with a screwthreaded aperture, the other member having a. stop-head, an elongated aperture and an aperture at the rear of the elongated aperture, and a set-'screw adapted to engage either aperture of the second-named member and the aperture of the first-named member whereby the head when in its operative position is engaged with the door, and when in its inoperative or folded position lies in the recess with its outer surface flush with the point of the prong, substantially` as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit-A nesses.
ROBERT OEHRING.
