ADOLF W. PETERSON, OF IRONWOOD, MICHIGAN.
DOOR OR WINDOW SECURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1908.
Application filed August 19, 1905. Serial No. 274,936.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF I/V. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ironwood, in the county of Gogebic and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful type of Door or l/Vindow Securer, of which the following is a'specification.
My invention consists of a new type of thumb-screw; and the objects of this new and improved type are, first, to reinforce the action of the screw by a shoulder set obliquely to the axis of the screw; second, to make it convenient to remove or insert the object to be fastened without removing the screw; third, to provide a fastener that may be conveniently operated without the use of a screw-driver or any other tool.
I attain these objects by the device illus trated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows the improvement in position for removing object fastened, which in the drawing is intended to represent a window-sash. Fig. 2 shows the improvement in position to lock the sash. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4 is a similar view at right angles to Fig. 3.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The head or upper part A may be similar to that in any ordinary thumb-screw, and is no part of this invention. I
The shoulder B is set at an angle of approximately 10 degrees from dotted line F in Figs. 3 and 4, which line (F) is drawn at right angles to the screw C; it is semi-circular, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; the base is smooth, and straight with the exception of the extreme lowest point, where it is slightly curved upward so as not to cut into the sash when turning the screw back, substantially as shown in Fig. 4; and it is increasing in thickness towards the head A to give additional solidity, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4..
The screw 0 may be any ordinary screw, but must be of a type having thread its enthe length and of uniform thickness excepting at the end, Where it should be pointed, as shown in Figs. 8 and 4. The object of using that particular type of screw is to keep the device rigidly in the casing when turned back one or several revolutions to accommodate it to fastening sashes of varying thickness.
D represents a section of an outside window casing and E represents a section of a storm sasln The device is particularly suitable for fastening storm sash and screen sash to the outside window casing; but it may also be used for fastening doors from the inside and for various other purposes.
In the different views of the drawing, the
device is shown approximately full size for an ordinary'sash fastener; but it may be made in different sizes.
Any suitable metal may be used for manufacturing the device; but other materials may also be used for its manufacture. If brittle material is used, the screw may be made thicker in proportion to the device than shown in the drawing.
I am aware that prior to my invention thumb-screws provided with a shoulder were made. Consequently I do not claim the invention broadly of a thumb-screw having a shoulder; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A thumb screw comprising a head and a threaded shank, a shoulder being provided between the head and the shank, said shoulder being adapted to engage the article upon which the thumb screw is used, the engaging face of said shoulder being inclined with respect to the axis of the screw for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLF IV. PETERSON.
I/Vitnesses J AS. A. SULLIVAN, N. BLOOMQUEST.
