W. H. OOOLEY. SASH FASTENER.
No. 416,359. Patented Dec. 3, 1889.
Wdmeoow N. Pr rzks Phuioiilhognpher. Wnlhingmn, u. c.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. COOLEY, OF NEl/VTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of, Letters Patent No. 416,359, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed September 21, 1889. Serial No. 324,603. (No model.)
To' all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. CooLEY, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Locks and Holders; and I do hereby declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-holders such as are adapted to hold or look the sash at any desired point, and particularly to such as are adapted to lock both the upper and lower sash simultaneously, and has for its object to improve the structure and efficiency of such devices as heretofore made, adapting them for use in connection with different-sized sash.
The invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter de scribed, and pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sash lock and holder constructed in accordance with my invention, the sash and casing being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar View of a holder with the parts separated.
Like letters of reference indicate the same parts.
The operative parts of the device consist, essentially, of two clamps A and B, suitably held in the Window-casing and adapted to be drawn together by the cam O and rod E to clamp the sash between them, suitable means-such as a spring D-being employed to separate the clamps when the cam is released. Rod E passes freely through the inner clamp B, but is connected rigidly, as by a nut a, to the outer clamp A, the inner end of the rod being adjustably connected to the cam, preferably by being threaded and screwed into the collar F, pivotally connected to the cam, thus enabling the relative permanent distance of the clamps from each other to be varied and the device adapted to windows having thick or thin sash.
The two clamps, it is'obvious, may be movclamp, through which the rod passes and against which the cam takes its bearing, thus enabling a practical clamp to be formed of but four or five parts.
The cam is provided with a handle H for convenience in manipulation, and in order to hold it in locked position a flat portion 0 is provided, which, coming in contact with the bearin g-surface, prevents the accidental movement of the cam in either direction.
In applying the device it is preferably arranged at the center of the Window in position to clamp both the sashes together, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
While I have described the device with great particularity, it is obvious that the specific manner of uniting the parts may be varied, and that the different parts may be formed of cast or malleable cast-iron or other suitable metal cast or bent into shape, without departing in the least from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what Y I claim as new is 1. In a sash holder and lock, the combination, with the two clamps, of the rod con nected to one clamp and passing freely through the other, and the cam for drawing said clamps together, substantially as described.
2. In a sash holder and lock, the combination, with the two clamps, of the rod connected to one clamp and passing freely through the other, the cam, and an adjustable connection between said rod and cam, substantially as described.
3. In a sash holder and lock, the combina tion, with the two clamps and the base in which said clamps move, of the rod connected to one clamp, and the cam connected to the rod and bearing against the opposite clamp, substantially as described.
i. In a sash holder and lock, the combination, with the base and clamps movably mounted therein, of the rod connected to one clamp, the cam connected to the rod, and the 5 spring for separating the clamps, substantially as described.
5. In a sash holder and lock, the combination, with the base and clamps movably mounted therein, of the rod connected to one clamp, the cam connected to the rod and hearto ing'against the opposite clamp, with the Hat section for holding the cam in locked position, substantially as described.
WM. H. COOLEY. Witnesses:
J. A. HATCH, II. D. A'rwoon.
