Description

O. J. DEISNER.
SASH HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 23, 1914.
I WITNESSES h fiffa ffl 63192167 ATTORIVL'YS v OTTO J. DEISNER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SASH-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Application filed July 23, 1914. Serial No. 852650.
To all 'tt'llOl/t it may concern Be it known that I, O'r'ro J. DEISNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of C-uyahoga .and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- ;Iliolders, of which the following is a specifi- "cation.
holding the device in any desired position.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate partsarc designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in whicl I igure 1. is a fragmentary, inside, elevation of a window frame having two sashes provided with my invention, one in unlocked position, and the other in locked position. 2. is a section taken on the line 2.% of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l.
-In the drawings forming a part of this application I have shown a window-frame (1 having an upper sash a and a lower sash a vertically movable therein, said frame be ing provided with the usual sash stops a" and a. Y
My invention comprises a plate 6 rotatably secured to a sash by means of a screw 6 and provided with diametrically opposite, and oppositely directed; cam surfaces 6 rising from the plane of the plate I), as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the outer edges 6 of which are eccentric to the pivot screw b and I provide parallel side edges on the said plate, as shown at 5 iii-such manner as to have the radius of the nner edges of the cams b merge with said parallel edges, thus makingthe diameter of the plate transversely of the parallel edges less than 1 the diameter of the plate on a line at right angles to the transverse diameter, for a reason later described.
The plate Z is provided with a hole 0 thcretln'ough, at a distance from the screw and I pivotally mount a plate spring 0 having a sharp pin 0", or equivalent, adapted to pass through the hole 0 and enter the wood of the sash at any desired point inorder to lock the plate I) against movement, said plate spring being provided with a small lip at its outer end whereby it may be engaged by the nail on the thumb or finger of a person to raise the pin from the wood and swing the spring to clear'the pin from the hole, whereby said pin rests upon the upper surface of the plate 6 and permits the free rotation of the same. In practice, I mount the plate 7), by means of the screw 5 upon a sash in close proximity to the inner edge of a stop, a or with the adjacent parallel edge of theplate at a slight distance from the stop to permit free sash movement, and the s ring plate is brought into action to lock the plate I) in such position, and the device is inoperative, as will be seen.
When' it is desired to prevent the sash from rattling, as in windy weather, or when it is desired. to lock the sash at any point to prevent sash movement from the exterior of the window, the pin is raised out of the hole c-and the spring 0 moved on its pivot sufliciently far to cause the pinto bear upon the plate I), as clearly shown inthe device on the lower sash a", after which the device is turned in the direction of the arrow to carry the thinnest portion of .a cam between the sash and adjacent stop, rotation being continued until the plate I) can be rotated no further, and this serves to force the sash away from thesaid stop and against the complemental stop, a for a and a for a, and no rattling of the sash can occur.
If it is desired to' lock the sash, either in closed or in partially open position, the spring 0 is swung on its pivot to permit the pin a" to passthrough the plate b and enter the material of the sash, and it will be seen that the sash cannot be moved in either direction.
I prefer to provide two forms of the device and in which the cams are 'reversely arranged, thus adapting each to a corresponding direction of sash opening movement, but this is'not essential, as I may just as well reverse the two cams on each platev 6, thereby adapting one form of the device to all conditions.
The device is preferably composed of metal throughout, but I do not limit myself to any specific material, nor to any specific detailsybut may make changes in and modifications of the form shown, within the scope of the following claim, Without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacri-- ficing its advantages. p
Having fully described :my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: p
;A device of the class described, comprising'a'plate provided with an inclined Incinber forming a cam at the edge thereof,
adapted to enter between a sash and its stop, means for rotatably mounting said plate on 5 a sash, and a plate spring provided With an inwardly directed pin adapted to be passed through said plate and into the material ofthe sash, to lock said sash against movement.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 20 name to this specification in the presence of the subscribing Witnesses. OTTO J. DEISNER.
