To a-ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES SZALAI, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Locks, of which the following is a specification..
Thisy invention relates to certain new and useful improvements' in window locks and has particular reference to a locking device carried by the upper rail of the lower sash thatis adaptedr for engagement with the lower rail of the upper sash to retain the window frame in a locked position, and is further adapted for engagement with the side rails of the upper sash at different points, to hold the windows in a locked partly opened position.
lYVith the above generalobjects in view the inventionconsists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with acv companying drawing, and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. Y
In the drawings y Fig. 1 isa fragmentary side elevational view of a portion of a window casing and frame showing the window lock carried by the upper rail of the lower sash and spaced sockets carried by aside rail of the upper sash,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on theline II-II of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the lock removed from'the window sash showing the locking bolt in its projected position,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line IV-IV of Figure 3 showing the iside grooves in the upper side of the locking bolt,
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the lock showing the tensioned pin carried by the lock casing extending into the groove of the locking bolt, and also showing the groove in the bolt casing for guiding thel locking lug carried by the bolt,
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken on line VI-VI of Fig. 3 y'showing the locking lug carried by the bolt andthe side notches in the bolt casing for receiving the sameJ Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view taken on line VIL-VII of Fig. 3 showing the bolt groove in its uppermost position,
Fig. 8 is a detail cross sectional view showng the locking bolt partially rotated and hepin removed from the bolt groove,
Fig. 9 shows side and front elevational viedws of the keeper socket for the lock bolt, an
Fig. 10 isa front elevational view of a modified form of spaced plate for the keeper sockets.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated the window frame 1 having coacting lower and upper sashes 2 and 3, the lower sash being provided with a top rail 4 while the upper sash carries a lower rail 5 and a side rail 6. The lock associated with the window is car- 'le ried by the upper rail of the lower sash, the lock embodyingthe barrel 7 having a face plate 8 countersunk within the upper rail of the lower sash as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the barrel being provided with a longitudina'lly extending axial bore 9 which communicates with a longitudinally extending side opening groove 10 in the ends of the barrel as shown in Figure 5, and a side opening 11 in the barrel 7 diametrically opposite so 'the groove 10 adjacent the outer end of the barrel. K
A sliding bolt 12 is freely movable within the barrel bore 9 having upon the outer end thereof an operating knob 13. A block 14C 85 is carried by the bolt 12 and is freely slidable in the groove 10, the inner end of the groove communicating with side sockets 15. into which the block 14 may be selectively positioned upon rotation of the bolt to hold 9o the bolt in position against movement relative to the barrel casing 7.
To maintain the block 111 in position aligned with the groove 10, the upper side of the bolt 12 is provided with a longitudin 95 nally extending groove 16 into which a finger 17 located within the opening 11 formed in the barrel 7 is received, the finger 17 being spring pressed as at 18 with the spring confined in the opening 11 by the screw 100 plucf 19.
The socketed keeper member for the projecting end of the lock bolt 12 is shown in detail in Figure 9, the same embodying -a face plate 2O comprising a tubular extension 105 21 that is countersunk within the lower rail 5 of the upper sash and also disposed in spaced vertical positions upon the side rails 6 of the upper sash as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the socketed keeper member being 110 retained in position by fastening devices extending through openings 22 inthe iace plate 20 .oii' the keeper, 4While "the face plate and tubular extension 21 has a central bore 23 for the reception ot' saidubolt.` A inoldiied iorm of keeper s shown in Figure l0 and embodies a. rectangular plate 24 having4 openings 22 by which the same may be secured to the lower rail of the-upper sash, and also to the side rail thereof, the plate Qbeing provided `With a central opening registering with asocket in the rails `o the barrel-ft by grippingthe knobV 13. iwfheii it is desired to lock t-heboit 12in its extended position es" shown in Figure' Q'is rotated `in either `direction by the knob 13 `to displace-the springpressed finger 1T from engagement in the groove i6, -the boitv and spring pressed fingers occupying;` the relativeoositions shown in Fio'urel 8 While; 2:1 7 Y f-iothefbiookH14"is received in either ot the sockets i5` as shown by dotted lines inTig-ure 'y 6, 'thefboit when" s o positioned being prerentedv from iongitudineily shiip'iinginovement "w'ithin the casingbarrei i". The boit 315 when rlocked in Vits extended position is y received inthe socketed keeper iriththe two window sashes 2 and 3 locked ,in a closed" pesitioinoilocked in partioilyA open position.
piate`20,*the type of keeper plate 2412 as shown inFigiire mayy be employed and is secured tothel lower railof lthe upper sash and.`
