WILLIAM K. DARE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SASH-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1911.
Application filed December 3, 1910. Serial No. 595,335.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM K. DARE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of wiich the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sash locks and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be used as an ordinary window sash lock, and which may be used as a door lock by means of which a door may be locked or bolted on the inner side; a further object being to provide a device of the class specified which is simple in construction and operation, conveniently manipulated, and which is also comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view showing one side of a window frame and the bottom and top portions of the upper and lower sashes with my improved lock applied thereto; Fig. 2 a plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. l; a partial section on the line 14 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a one side of a window frame and at Z) a part of the upper sash, and at c a part of the lower sash, the bottom of the upper sash Z) being shown in trans verse section at If, and the top of the lower sash being shown in transverse section at 0 My improved sash lock consists of two parts one of which is secured to the bottom of the upper sash and the other to the top of the lower sash, and the part which is secured to the bottom of the top sash consists of a plate d provided with a raised jaw member d which ranges parallel with the glass 6 in the upper sash Z), and one side edge of which is cut out to form a recess (Z and overhanging aw (Z* in the bottom of which and centrally of the aw member (Z is an aperture d this construction being clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 1. The part which is secured to the bottom of the lower sash consists of a main plate 6 similar to the plate d, and which is secured on the top 0 of the lower sash c and provided centrally with a raised stud 6 having a nut 6 Mounted on the plate 6 and rotatable on the stud e is a lock plate f which is oblong in form and in one side edge of the outer end portion thereof is a transverse recess f which forms a lock jaw f Mounted on and countersunk in and longitudinally of the plate f is a longitudinally movable lock bar 9, the outer end portion of which is provided with a handle g and the inner end portion of which is provided with a beveled nose g and the stud 6 passes through a longitudinal slot 9 in the lock bar 9 and said lock bar is provided in the bottom side thereof with a longitudinal groove 9- in which is placed a spring 9. The plate 7' is also provided on the bottom thereof with a stud or pin i which is movable in a segmental groove i in the plate 6, and said groove and said stud or pin serve to limit the swing of the plate f on said plate 6.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
In the position of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper and lower sashes are locked together and cannot be lowered or raised. Whenever it is desired to manipulate the lock so that the upper sash may be lowered or the lower sash raised, the handle 9 of the lock bar 9 is grasped and-pulled outwardly against the operation of the spring This operation of said bar withdraws the nose g thereof from the overhanging jaw (F of the jaw member (2 and the plate 6 and lock bar 9 may be swung into the positions shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the upper and lower sashes may be raised and lowered, or otherwise manipulated. When it is desired' to lock the sashes together as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper sash b is raised and the lower sash 0 lowered into the position shown in Fig. 1, and the plate f with the lock bar 9 is swung into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. In this operation, the jaw f of the plate 7 engages the jaw member d as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the beveled nose 9 of the lock bar 9 first strikes the head 61 of the jaw (Z and is forced outwardly and the spring 9 when the plate f with the lock bar g are swung fully into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, forces the bar .9 backwardly I are securclylocked together.
I or release the sashes the drawn outwardly and the plate. fiwithqthe member having in dotted lines in applied as a that the same 1 adapted to be secured longitudinally of said lock vided at its outer end with so that the nose 9 thereof'enters' cheap er ture (Z in'the jaw member (Z? and t-he'sashes It will be understood that the operation of the lock bar g, when the plate f is swung into the position shown in full lines in Fig.
2, is automatic, but in order toopen the lock Although,-
struction described maybe made, within'the scope of the appended claims, without departing from thespirit of myinvention or sacrificing its advantages. r I Q Having fully described my invention,
what I claim .as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is j a r LA sash lock, comprising a jaw plate to the bottom of the upper sash and an overhanging jaw in the bottom of which is an aperture, a main plate adapted ,to be secured on the top'of thelower sash, an OblOng lock plate rotatably mounted on said main plate and provided at one end with a jaw adapted to engage the jaw memher, on the lock plate, a longitudinally movable lock bar countersunk in the top of and plate and proa handle and at its inner end with a beveled nose, and a spring placed beneath said lock barand operating to force it outwardly.
QKA sash lock, comprising a jaw plate adapted to be secured to the bottom ofthe' 'upperxsash lock bar 9: must beprovided with a raised jaw and provided with a raised jaw member havmg an overhanging aw in the a mam plate bottom of which is an aperture,
' adapted to be secured on the top of the lower sash, an oblong lock plate rotatably mounted on said main'plate and provided at one end with a jaw adapted to engage the jaw member on the lock plate, a longitudinally movable lock bar countersunk in the top of and longitudinally of said lock plate and 7 provided at its outer end with a handle and at itsinner end with a beveled nose, and a. spring placed beneath said'lock bar and operating to forceit outwardly, said lock plate and said main platebeing provided with means to limit the rotation of said lock plate.
3. A, sash lock comprising a jaw plate adapted to be secured "to the bottom of the upper sash and provided with a raised overhanging jaw member in the bottom of which is an aperture, amain plate adapted to be secured to the top of the lower sash, an oblong lock plate rotatably mounted on said main plateand provided at one end with a jaw adapted to engage the jaw member of said j aw plate, a longitudinally movable lock bar mounted on and movable longitudinally of said lock plate and provided at one end with a handle, and the opposite end of which is adapted to enter the aperture in the overhanging jaw, and a tension device for moving said lock bar in one direction.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in.
presence of the subscribing witnesses this 1st day of December 1910.
