vision of asash lolck whereby both sashes screw pivotally connected to the base-plates;
icitizen of the United States, residing at New I the following is a specification, reference beenip oyed for locking Winn ow sashes against operation, all of which will be hereinafter HERMAN NEUMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SA SH-LO CK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
Application fil ed March '1, 1908. Serial No. 419,669.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LHERMAN NEUMANN, a
York, in the county of New York and State ot New ork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which in had therein to the accompanying drawing. il' invention relates especially to devices movement, and has tor its object the pro ma be locked in a closed position, or either or oth open or partially open, preventing any movement of the sashes.
To attain the desired end my invention consists in a sash lock in which is comprised a base-plate adapted to be secured to a lower window sash, a pair of movable plates provided with jaws, pivoted to said base, and a and my invention also involves certain novel and uselul combinations or arrangements ot parts and peculiarities otconstruction and first fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my sash fastener shown as applied to the lower sash of a window. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view at line aa of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of construction. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a fragment of an up )er window sash showing a metal plate a plied thereto with which the teeth of the ho (ling jaw may engage-when it is desired to protect the wood of the sash from injury. [like numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
1 is a base-plate ad: )ted to be secured to the lower sash of a win ow, reqluiring no cutier of sash or 6 are cars pivoted to the plates 2, also lrec to turn on their pivots.
7 is a screw, provided with a manipulating knob 8.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, the screw engages a thread in the outer or first ear, and rotatably engages the second or inner ear. In the modification of Fig. 4 the spindle of the knob 8 rotatably engages the first ear and is provided with an internal screw thread which engages the shank of the screw 7, the inner end thereof being turned downward and pivoted in the inner plate 2.
9 is the top rail ol a lower indow sash and 10 the upper sash.
11 is a metal late which may be secured to the side rail ol the upper sash.
12 is the window casing, 13 the inner stop, 14 the parting strip, 15 the sash cord, and 16 the outer stop.
No mechanical skill is required to apply niy sash fastener, it being held in place by screws passing through the base-plate into the top rail of the lower sash. In operation, by turning the manipulating knob, the jawlates turn upon the pivots and the screw lieing )ivotally connected to said plates, per niits the jaws to be forced away l'roin each other without binding the screw, and the in ner jaw takes in the inner 'l'acc of the stop 13, while the second jaw takes in the side rail of the up )cr sash, or in the nolrhcs ol' the plate secured thereto, ell'cctually locking the sashes against movement and preventing any rattle. It it is desired to secure either or both sashes partially open, they are located at the desired point, and then the lock is operated, iinniovably securing both sashes as desired.
Having now l'ully described my invention, what i claim as new therein and desire to secure b Letters Patent is: 7
1. A sash lock comprising a base-plate adapted to be secured to a lower sash, a pair of movable plates rovided with jaws, pivoted to said base-plate, and a screw pivotally engaging the jaw plates, substantially as shown and described.
A sash lock comprising a base-plate adapted to be secured to the top rail of a lower sash, 9; air of movable plates ivoted Iii istin'lbily whereof I hereto :iffiii my on said base-p ate, thehfree ends ofsai1 pgiates signature in presence of two Witnesses.
