Description

PATENTED FEB. 11., 1908.
J. H. BARTON. SASH LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED we. 7, 1901.
INVENTOH Lfes'o'efzffiariom srm o WITNESSES ATTORNEYS- PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE H. BARTON, OF BROWNSVILLE, TENNESSEE.
SASH-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1908.
Application filed August 7. 1907- Serial No. 387.440.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE H. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brownsville, in the county of Haywood and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has in view an improved sash lock which is adapted to securely lock both sashes at any desired position within the window frame, and which operates to make the window proof against burglars in that the sashes cannot be unlocked after breaking the glass by passing the hand through the window to the lock.
The invention further resides in certain special features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a window with my improved sash lock applied thereto, the latter being shown in locked position; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the window on an enlarged scale, at the point at which the lock is applied; Fig. 3 is asectional plan view on the line33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cam and operating-lever detached, which form elements of the sash lock, and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the position of the cam and lever when the sashes are unlocked.
In order to disclose the manner in which I contemplate applying my improved sash look, I have shown an ordinary window consisting of a frame 10 having the upper and lower sashes 11 and 12, respectively, slidable therein and separated at opposite sides by parting beads 18.
The sash lock consists of a bracket 14 which is attached at one side and to the upper edge of the lower sash 12, the said bracket being provided with a bearing at its upper extremity, in which is j ournaled a projecting stud or pin 15 fixed to one side of a cam 16. In contact with the periphery of the cam 16 is a bearing-plate 17 of spring metal which is also preferably secured to the top edge of the lower sash adjacent to the parting head 13. Between the bearingplate 17 and the adjacent parting-bead 13 is a rod 18 which extends substantially the full length of the top sash, and is connected thereto at its extremities.
lever 19 which carries a lug 20 at a point intermediate its length, adapted to engage a notch in the periphery of the cam and a pin 21 secured at one end, which when the lever is in place, is received in an aperture passing through the cam, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. By this construction the lever 19 may be readily displaced after the cam has been revolved to force the rod 17 into engagement with the parting bead, which will prevent the window from being opened even though access to the lock be had. In this manner it will be impossible for a burglar to raise the sash after cutting the glass and passing his hand through the window to the lock. It is thus seen that I have produced a very simple device which is capable of locking both sashes at any desired point within the window frame.
The sash look as shown and described while being my preferred form of construction, may nevertheless be modified without as defined within the scope of the annexed claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination with an upper and lower window sash separated by a parting bead, a sash lock comprising a bracket secured to the top of the lower sash, a cam journaled on the bracket, a rod attached to the upper sash between the cam and parting bead, a binding-plate carried by the lower sash and interposed between the rod and cam, and a lever for operating the cam to bind said rod against the parting bead.
2. In combination with a window frame having sashes slidable therein, a device carried by one of said sashes, and means carried by the other sash for binding said device against said frame, whereby both of said sashes are frictionally locked within the frame.
3. In combination with a frame having sashes slidable therein, a cam carried by one sash, means carried by the other sash arranged between the cam and window frame, and means for revolving the cam to bind said first-named means to the frame and lock both of said sashes.
For operating the cam 16 I provide a departing-from the nature of the invention 4. In combination with a frame having the cam and frame, and displaceable means sashes slidable therein, a cam carried by one for operating the cam to bind said rod against sash, means carried by the other sash ar- 1 the frame for the purpose described. ranged between the cam and Window frame, In testimony whereof I have signed my 5 and a lever detachably connected to the cam name to this specification in the presence of 15 for revolving it to bind said means to the tWo subscribing Witnesses.
frame and lock both of said sashes. JESSE H. BARTON.
5. In combination With a frame having Witnesses: sashes slidable therein, a cam carried by one M. V. CRUMP,
l0 sash, a rod carried by the other sash between BUTE BOND.
