Description
THOMAS E. GAIN, OF LOMlEARD,` MARYLAND.
` COMBINATION BURGLAR-ALARM AND WINDOW-SASH.
` Specicaton of Letters Patent. Y Application fuea'Apfii 24, `190e. serial No. 313,457.
Patented Oct. 6, 1908.
To all whom 'it may concern.' p A Be it known that I, THOMAS E. GAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lombard, in the county of `Cecil and State of Maryland,` have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combination Burglariilarm and VVindow-Sash, of which the following is a specification.
This invention isa combined window stop or fastener and burglaralarm, the invention being to VVprovide a cheap simple and efficient device which can be attached to the window sash and -frame and by means of which the windowcan be securely locked in a closed or intermediate position and another object of'n the invention is to provide in `connection with the locking mechanisiman alarm. which will sound when the window is either raised or lowered, thereby providing an efficient form of burglar alarm. V L r i With these objects in view, my invention consists essentially in the employment of a the object of rack bar which isarr'anged upon `the sidel rail of the window .sash-and which vis adapted t-o `engage a pinion mounted upon the window frame which pinion is adapted to be engaged by a pawl` for the purpose of lockingthe window ina raised position, and the invention also consists yin the employment of a bell provided with a leveror handle for operating the same, which lever or handle is acted upon by a movable bail connected "to the pinion so that in case t-he window is raised or lowered, the bail pulling upon the leverwill cause the bell to ring and thereby give the alarm. n y i The invention consistsalso in certain details of construction and 4novelties of com-` bination all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.`
In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure l is aV perspective view` showing the vention. tion. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view, Fig. 4 is a detail face view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the pinion carrying the crank pin. Fig. 6 is .a detail perspective view of the operating bail.
practical application of my in- In these drawings A indicates the side rail of the window sash, and `B the window frame, said parts beingof theusual or -ordidesiredto disconnect it during Fig. 2 is a detail sectional eleva- `nary construction and secured to the side rail of the sash is a rack bar C to be engaged by a pinion the window frame, and a which is adapted D mounted upon pawl E pivoted `also to the window frame permits the pinion to rotate in one direction butprevents the said pinion rotating in the opposite direction. y By this arrangement the vwindow can be raised and held locked in a completely raised or `intermediate position. Any suitable form of catch or lock F may be arranged upon the window sill for the purpose of engaging the bottom tooth of the rack bar 'and vthereby securely fasten the window in a closed position.
. Gr indicates a bell having a handle or lever H, projecting therefrom, and by means of which the said bell is sounded and for the purpose of operating this handle or lever when the window is raised or lowered, I employ a bail I, essentially rectangular in shape, the bottom member of which is adapted to t beneath the handle or lever I-I and at its upper end this bail is constructed with an eye I, which iits over a crank pin K, carried by the pinion D, so that a new movement of the window either up or down, will cause the pinion to rotate and this rotation `ol" the pinion will work the bail up and down and cause it to pull upon the handle or lever I-I, and in order to hold this bail in this position at all times, `I employ a guide eye L, which is secured to the window frame and through which the free end of the bail works las shown clearly in Fig. 4.
The pawl E can be thrown oii1 whenever it i's desired to lower the window and the bail is so constructed and arranged that if the day, so as to. avoid sounding the alarm, it can be quickly and easily accomplished by simply removing the eye from the crank pin of the pinion.
It will thus be seen that I provide an eX- ceedingly cheap, simple and efficient form of combination window lock Vor fastener and burglar alarm.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the kind described, the combination with the rack bar, pinion and pawl, of a bell provided with a lever or handle, a.
