Description

J. G. WALDRIP.
s AAAAAAAA NEE No. 464,445. I Patented Dec. 1, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. IVALDRIP, OF GREENUP, ILLINOIS.
SAS H-FASTENER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,445, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed June 13, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN C. WALDRIP, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greenup, in the county of Cumberland and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-holders; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window-sash provided with my improved holder. Fig. 2 is a verticallongitudinal section of the holder, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the catch.
The window-sash A is of the usual or any preferred construction, and the frame 13 is provided on its side with a rack-bar O, the teeth of which have their square shoulders at their upper ends and theiriuclined orbeveled sides below the said shoulders, as will be readily understood upon reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings. On the front side of the sash, at the lower corner of the same, I secure a casing or box D, having an openingE in its outer edge and having its interior hollow, as shown at F. A lever G is pivoted at the bottom of the hollow portion F of the box and has its upper end projecting through the upper end of the box. A spring H, arranged between the lever and the side of thebox, presses the lever normally toward the side of the windowframe, thereby causing a tongue or latch I, pivoted to said lever, to project through the opening E in the box. in position to engage the rack-bar O on the window-frame. A spring J is arranged between this latch and the bot tom of the opening, so as to press the latch upward and thereby prevent the same from falling into a position in which it could not readily engage the rack-bar. A sliding bolt K is arranged in the bottom of the box and is adapted to engage one of a series of sockets in the rack-bar, so as to preventthe sash from being raised from the outside.
In practice the device is secured to the window, as shown and as above described, and
Serial No. 396,158. (No model.)
once throws the lever outward and consequently causes the latch to engage the teeth of the rackbar to hold the sash at the desired height, as will be readily understood and appreciated. hen it is desired to lower the sash, the upper end of the lever is drawn inward and the latch thus disengaged from the rack-bar, after which the sash will be free to descend.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have produced a sash-holder that is practically automatic in its operation and which is very simple in its construction and arrangement of parts. The device is very small and light and does not detract from the appearance of the sash, and at the same time forms a very secure fastening to hold the same at any desired height. The several parts are all inclosed and protected by the casing or box, and thereby guarded against breakage or injury. of the box will be found very efficient in securing the sash at night, so that it cannot be raised from the outside to admit thieves or other evil-disposed persons.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In a sash-holder, the combination of the rack-barsecured to the window-frame, the box secured to the sash and having an opening in its outer edge, the lever pivoted within the box and having its upper end projecting through the top of the same, a spring arranged between the side of the box and the lever, a latch pivoted to the lever and projecting through the opening in the outer edge of the box, and a spring arranged between the latch and the bottom of the said opening, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN C. IVALDRIP.
Witnesses:
