JOHN HPFELMLEE, OF GREELEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE O. NORRIS, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
SASH-HOLDER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,024, dated January 26, 1886.
Application filed July 80, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, JOHN H. FELMLEE, a'citizen ofthe United States, residing at Greeley, in the county of \Veld and State of Colorado,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sash Holder and Look, of which the followingisaspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My improvement relates to sash-holders which are placed in the stile to hold the sash by the pressure of a lever'actuated bolt against the window-casing; and the object of my improvement is to provide a construction of sash holder andlock in which the bolt and its actuating-lever are both carried in a single attaching-plate having a face-projecting guideway and a slot for the bolt, and a lever-handle adapted to be locked with a rack-plate to lock the bolt to the sash and thelatter to the window-jamb,asshownin the drawings,in which- Figure 1 represents, in broken elevation, a window sash and frame with my improved sash holder and lock; Fig. 2, avertical section enlarged, showing the device as applied to the sash-stile with the bolt retracted; Fig. 3. a similar view showing the bolt locked against the window-jamb. Fig. 4 shows the slotted lever-connection with the bolt. Fig. 5 shows the slotted rack-plate and the beveled leverhandle in locked position therewith, and Fig. 6 shows the attaching-plate and its face-projecting guideway for receiving the bolt and its actuating-lever.
The device consists of a plate, A, having a slot, 8, and guideway projection c on the face of said plate inclosing said slot, said guideway being open in the line of the slot and closed at its bottom, as shown in Fig. 6. An L-shaped lever, B, is pivoted at c in the upper open end of the guideway projection c, and the bolt 0 is placed within and rests upon the bottom 3 of said guideway, with its acting end in the slot 8 of the plate A, so as to be wholly withdrawn within said guideway and projected therefrom beyond the face of said plate. This plate is countersunk and fastened in the edge of the stile a, which is cut away to re- Serial No. 173,039. (No model.)
as to actuate the bolt in a line at right angles to thejamb dthat is, the lever acts to move the bolt without binding in its guideway. At the edge of the stile next the glass a slotted plate, E, is screwed, having one side of the slot formed with ratchet-teeth h, into which the lever'handle, which is beveled at z, is caused to engage to lock the bolt when projected against the jamb, to hold the sash open or to lock it when closed. For this purpose the slot is made wide enough to allow for the engagement and disengagement of the lever handle with said ratchet-teeth. The acting end of the bolt may be either concave, as in Fig. 4, to make two biting-edges, or it may be fiat and corrugated or convex, and the bolt may be made of rubber. A finger-piece, D, on the inner edge of the sash-stile serves to give the hand the required hold in forcing down the lever to give the bolt a hard press ure upon the jainb to lock the sash. The opposite side of the sash may be provided with cushions F F, to allow it to have a yielding movement against the action of the bolt.
I claim The combination, with the plate A, having the slot 8, and the guideway projecting from the side thereof inclosing said slot, the L- shaped lever B, pivoted within said projecting guideway, having its handle beveled, and the bolt supported in said guideway, of the slot ted plate E, having ratchet-teeth h, corresponding to the bevel of the lever-handle, whereby the lever serves to slide the bolt to lock it to the sash and to lock thelatter to the window, as described.
In testimony'whereof I have affixed my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
JOHN V H. FELMLEE.
