Description

evaporator of a refrigerator.
Patented PATENT oFFicE I .2,024,4.931'fvv Ramona-Aron EvAPonAToa vDoonl Walter H. Weinrich,` Chicago, `Ill.; assignor to Stewart-Warner lCor poration, Chicago, yIll., a corporation `of Virginia 'Application December 1s, 193?., srerial No. 703,024
My invention lrelates to a.. detachable door'and are so made that conduits or passages are formed through which the refrigerant circulates about an internal freezing compartment, in whichtrays of water or food may be' placed for freezing. To
facilitate this freezing, it is desirable to provide a closure for .this internal-compartment in order to prevent the circulation of the warmer outside air into the freezing chamber.
The use of lthiskin'd of evaporator; however; makes it difficult toattach a door or'closure for theA freezing compartment. In the first place, itis undesirable itc make any perforations for' rivets or screws, because the dangerfo'f causing a. leak through Vwhichirefrigerant gas-may escape.
Furthermore, the fact that the evaporatoris vto be enameled makes it difficult to apply any supports o or hinges for a door because of the fact that it is diicult to secure an even coat -ofl enamelover small and irregularly shaped parts, and also be- Acauseof the fact that the enamel is likely vto clog-or obstruct any openings` in the-supporting parts, for example;v the openlngfor receiving'a vhinge pin. If the attempt is made, after the enameling'has been completed, to attach a door support in some conventional mannenit is likely 'thatthe enamel will be chipped o r marred.
My invention not only overcomes these dif"v iiculties, but provides several additional valuable novel features. Some users maywish to dispense with the door entirely for reasons of convenience, Aeven though this may sacrice .the speed and economy with which the watermay be' frozen within the compartment. My door is readily detachable so .that this may be accomplished. Moreover', my door may be attached toeither side of the evaporator so that it may open in either direction. This is vdesirable because of the fact that refrigerators are usually sold with .the main door opening from the right or left hand at the buyers option, and itis desirable that the door of the freezing compartment shouldopen in the'same direction asjthe main door in order that the closing of the main doorvwill also close the freezing compartment door instead of to an evaporator, the hinge clip togetherwith v knocking against it in c ase it is inadvertently leftopen. With this feature of my .invention it is unnecessary to provide a diiferent evaporator and door structure for right and, left hand main doors.
1n addition to the above ,fe'atureS, it will be' seen that the door I have provided is very simple,
neat, and inexpensive to manufacture.
'A thorough understanding of my -inventionmay be had by reference to the 'accompanying draw- 5 ing, in which l Figure 1 is a perspective view of the evaporator and door combination; y i
Figure 2 is a detail section'showing'the latching of the hinge for-the door upon the evaporator, 10
and Y Figure 3 is a detail Vsection showing the mountin'g'of the hinge for the door upon the evaporator. Referring now to Figure 1, evaporator Il), having conduit portions I2 and tted with an ice 15 tray receiving l'shelf I4, yis illustrated in connec.-
tion with a .conventional refrigerator cabinet. .Asv
a closure-for the compartment I6, I have provided ga stampedmetal door I8, which carries hinge straps 2n. I
hinge clip, 22, formed with liiat internal portions' 24'. and an outer portion 26 suitably shaped to be clipped over the outer face of the evaporator. Formed as part of vthe Vclip bystamping, Ihave 25 provided ears. 28, through which hinge pins 30 v are passed. TheseV hinge pinsare-riveted at their ends Vto hold them in place.. Y
It will be noticed thatspaces areleft' between the. inner.' flat portions 24. These spaces-are 30 left in order that the clips may b e attached to the evaporator without interference with the shelf I4.
Il, which also holds,in place a spring latch 36.
.To engage the latch and hold the door in place, a latch clip 38 is provided which is substantially similar to the hinge -clip 22. However. this latch clip is formedjwith an in-turned lip 40,.which 45 servesto engage thespring latch 36. As a stop for the door to prevent the doors swinging too far' open, I have provided lugs 42 which are stamped out of the hinge clips 22.
It will be seen that in order to attach my door the door is clipped over one edge of thev evaporator, the latch clip is ,placed over the opposite edge. The door may then be opened or shut as desu-ed. It wmbe seen that has been acf 20V To form a hinge support, 1\have provided an 4;" an latch clip detachablysecuredto acorrugation at anopposite edge of the-icasingnand adapted ao- It, is. lfner'eliiyi certified that error appears vthe printe'dlspeoifi'oatonAofi-f engagement with said door latch.
complished in a very simple manner, without perforation of the evaporator and without damage tothe enamel.V It will also be seen .that if desired the door may be made to swing from either do not intend to limit myself except to the spirit of my invention herein described.
I claim:
