2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and. useful improvements in door fasteners of the removable or portable type and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a door fastener of this character embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts through the medium of which said fastener may be expeditiously adjusted for use on difierent doors.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a door fastener of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a plan view of a door fastener constructed in accordance with this invention in position between a door and its jamb, said door and jamb being shown in horizontal section.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the device.
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation, showing the bolt in retracted position.
Figure 4 is a view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a detail view in side elevation of the housing.
Figure 7 is a detail view in side elevation of the bolt.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 1 designates a portion of a. door and 2 designates a portion of the door jamb. As usual, the jamb 2 is provided with a socket 3 which ordinarily receives the usual door bolt or latch. The jamb 45 2 is further provided with a conventional strike plate 4 surrounding the socket 3.
The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a substantially ovate metallic plate 5 which is insertable between the door 1 and the J'amb 2 and which has projecting laterally from one end portion a lug 6 which is engageable in the socket 3 in a manner to positively prevent withdrawal of the plate 5 when the door 1 is closed.
55 That portion of the plate 5 which projects inwardly free of the door 1 is provided with a longitudinal slot 7 with which a series of downwardly extending notches 8 communicate. Mounted for longitudinal sliding adjustment on one side of the plate 5 is a substantially ushaped housing 9 having its inner side closed by a wall 10. The housing 9 is open on its outer side. The housing 9 is adjustably mounted on the plate 5 through the medium of a pin 11 which is operable in the slot 7 and engageable selectively in the notches 8. A guide rib 12 is formed integrally in the housing 9 on the side wall 10 of said housing. The purpose of the guide rib 12 will be presently set forth.
Rotatably mounted on the pin 11 is a disk 13 having an actuating handle 14 extending therefrom. A nut 15 is threaded on the pin 11 for retaining the elements 5, 9 and 13 in assembled relation. The marginal portion of the disk 13 is rotatably engaged with the outer side of the housing 9, as illustrated to advantage in Figure 5 of the drawings. 7
The reference numeral 16 designates a bolt which is slidable in the housing 9 between the inner side wall 10 of said housing and the disk 13. At its outer end, the bolt 16 is provided with a flat head 1'? which is engageable with the free end of the door, in the manner illustrated to advantage in Figure 1 of the drawings. The bolt 16 further includes a pair of inwardly extending, parallel, spaced legs 18 which straddle the pin 11 and slidably engage the guide rib 12.
A cam 19, of skeleton form, is provided on the inner side of the disk 13 and is operatively engageable with the bolt 16 for moving said bolt 9 outwardly toward operative position when the lever 14 is swung from the position indicated in 'Figure 3 of the dram'ngs to the position illustrated in Figure 2 of said drawings. A lug 20 projects from one of the legs 18 of the bolt 16 and is engageable by the inner side of the cam 19 for retracting said bolt 16 when the handle 14 is swung in the opposite direction.
In use, the door 1 is swung open to permit the lug 6 to be engaged in the socket 3 of the jamb 2, after which the door is closed. The housing 9 is then adjusted to the desired position adjacent the door on the plate 5 by engaging the pin 11 in the proper notch 8. Then, the handle 14 is swung downwardly for rotating the disk 13 and 9 the cam 19 in a manner to move the bolt 16 outwardly and clamp said bolt tightly against the door 1. The door is thus secured against being opened from the outer side. To release the device, the handle 14 is, of course, swung upwardly,
thus retracting the bolt 16 through the medium of the cam 19 and the lug 20, after which the movable elements may be shifted rearwardly as a unit on the plate 5 sufficiently to permit the door 1 to be swung open.
It is believed that the many advantages of a door fastener constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A door fastener comprising a plate engageable between the door and a door jamb, means for anchoring the plate between the door and the jamb, said plate having a slot therein and further having a plurality of notches communicating with the slot and extending downwardly therefrom, a pin operable in the slot and engageable selectively in the notches, a housing mounted on the pin, a bolt slidably operable in the housing and engageable with the door, and means mounted on the pin and bearing on said housing for actuating the bolt.
2. A door fastener comprising a substantially flat plate engageable between the door and a door jamb, means on the plate for anchoring the same between the door and the jamb, said plate having a slot therein and further having a plurality of notches communicating with the slot and extending downwardly therefrom, a transversely extending pin adjustably mounted on the plate, said pin being operable in the slot and engageable selectively in the notches, a housing mounted on the pin for adjustment therewith on the plate, a guide rib in the housing, a bolt slidably mounted in the housing and operatively engageable with the door, said bolt including a pair of spaced, parallel legs slidably engaged with the rib, and manually operable means carried by the pin and bearing on said housing for actuating the bolt.
