QUICK LOCK DOOR SECURER Filed Sept. 14, 1959 a 2 i O INVENTOR. Lows J. SCHETTL ATTORNEY United States Patentice QUICK LOCK DOOR SECURER Louis J. Schettl, 1012 Columbus St., Two Rivers, Wis.
, 7 Filed Sept. 14, 1959, S61. N0. 839,779
' 8 Claims (Cl. 292-294 This invention relates to a portable door securing device and more particularly to such a device which includes a quick lock feature.
The object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive portable door securing device which is quick lockmg.
This object is accomplished by providing four basic parts which include a bar with a toothed edge and a lug at one end for engagement with the keeper-plate of a door latch, an externally threaded member which is noranally freely slidable on the bar, an internally threaded knob mounted on the externally threaded member, and a block slidably mounted on the bar between the lug and knob. This block may be omitted if desired by providing the knob with a resilient face for bearing directly against a door to be secured.
In order to secure a door. the knob is gripped and moved toward the door until it shoves the block into contact with the door. At this point the slidable member drops into engagement with one of the teeth on the bar.
Then the knob is rotated to force the slidable block against the door with the desired force.
This device improves on other quick locking devices in that it has both rough and fine adjustments for positioning it with respect to the door, thereby quaranteeing that it will bear against the door with enough pressure to hold the door shut, but gently enough not to mar it. The rough adjustment is made by moving the knob and element to the proper point for engagement with a tooth on the bar, as described above, and the fine or Vernier adjustment is made by rotating the knob until just the right pressure is exerted against the door.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following specification and claims in which:
Fig. 1 is a top view of a door securer operatively mounted to hold a door closed;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1 showing the engagement between the toothed bar and normally slidable member when the door securer is in operative position;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the door securer in inoperative position;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the left end of the slidable member;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the right end of the slidable member.
Referring to the drawings, a grippe r bar has a lug 12 on one end which engages a keeper-plate 14 on a door frame 16.
An externally threaded member 18 is normally, meaning when the device is not holding the door 20 closed, freely slidable on bar 10. Member 18 includes a threaded shell 22 and end discs 24 and 26. Disc 24 has a slot 28. Disc 26 has a slot 30 which extends to' the outer edge of disc 26 and which is aligned with slot 28 to receive bar 10 to permit member 18 to be mounted on the bar. It is not essential that these slots both lie on a diameter of the end discs as shown in the drawing,
Patented Jan. 24, 1961 so that the member will normally occupy a canted position with respect to bar 10, as shown in Fig. 3, so that disc 26 can clear the teeth 32 on the bar. In moving member 18 toward handle 34, the member can be lifted over the catching edges 36 of the teeth to facilitate movement. However, this tends to force disc 24 down into engagement with the catching edge of another tooth. To prevent this, a ramp 38 is mounted inside member 18 so that disc 24 is cammed over the catching edges of the teeth. Mounting the member 18 in a canted position with respect to bar 10 is necesary to achieve the quick lock action of this device which will next be described.
An internally threaded knob 40 is screwed onto member 18. Knob 40 includes a pressure wall 42 which has an aperture 44 through which bar 10 passes. A freely slidable block 46 of resilient material such as wood, plastic or hard rubber is mounted on the bar between lug 12 and knob 40, so that the knob can be moved toward the door until block 46 is caught between the door at one end and the pressure wall 42 at the other end. When the parts of the device are moved into this position, disc 26 drops into engagement with a catching edge 36 of one of the teeth so that member 18 assumes the uncanted position shown in Fig. 2. The knob is then rotated and this forces block 46 against door 20 and frame 16 with a force suflicient to securely hold the door closed.
It will be appreciated that this construction permits the door securer to be quickly put into use and is also very economical in that it includes only four simple and inexpensive parts.
I claim:
1. A quick lock door securing device comprising, a. gripper bar adapted at one end to engage the keeper-plate of a door latch, an externally threaded member nor mally free'y slidable on said gripper bar, a block slidably mounted on said bar between said one end and said member, an internally threaded knob threadably mounted on said member to project beyond the end of said member which is next to said block, catch means on said bar, and engaging means on said member operative to engage said catch means when said block is pushed against a door by said knob.
2. The combination according to claim 1 in which said catch means comprises a plurality of teeth on one edge of said bar with each tooth having a catching edge.
3. The combination according to claim 2 in which said engaging means includes a disc in one end of said member having a slot in which said bar is mounted so that as said knob is rotated the disc bears against one of said catching edges to stop the member in place on said bar so that said block is forced against the door to be secured.
4. The combination according to claim 3 in which said member includes a second disc at its other end having a slot in which said bar is mounted, and a ramp inside said member adjacent the toothed edge of said bar whereby said teeth cannot engage said second disc.
5. A quick lock door securing device comprising, a gripper bar having a lug at one end for engaging the keeper-plate of a door latch, expansive means movably mounted on said bar, said expansive means including an externally threaded member slidably mounted on said bar, and an internally threaded knob threadably mounted on said member, said knob having an end projecting beyond the end of said member toward said lug, and stop means on said bar for engaging said expansive means whereby said means can be expanded between said stop means and a door to hold the door shut, said stop means including a plurality of teeth on one edge of said bar with each tooth having a catching edge.
6. The combination according to claim 5 in which said member includes a disc in one end having a slot in which said.- bar is nlcmnteclv so. ha as. s id; kno is ro ated said disc bears against one of, said catching edges to; stop said member in place on said" bar: so that said, knob transmits a closing force, to, the door being sccm'ed.
7 The combinationv according to claim 6; in which said member includes a second disc at its other endhaving a slot in which said bar is mounted, and a ramp inside said, member adjacent the toothed edge; of saidbar whereby said teeth cannot engage said second disc.
8. The combination according to claim 5 in; which a resilient block is slidably mounted on said bar between said lug and said knob.
