COMBINED HASP APPLIGATIONPILED UNITED STATES PATENT Orton.
THEODORE E. ORECELIUS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO WOODHOUSE HARDWARE MANUFACTURING COM- PANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
COMBINED HASP AND HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
J'ratented May 29, 1906.
To all, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE E. CREoEL- IUS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Hasp and Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device which is of utility as both a hasp and a hook for securing doors or gates and to which a padlock may be applied to hold the hasp and hook confined within the receiving-staple, through which its free end is passed.
Figure I is a perspective view of portions of the door and its frame with my hasp and hook shown applied thereto. Fig. II is a top view of the parts shown in Fig. I.
1 designates the body of my hasp and hook, which is made from a flat piece of metal and has a quarter-twist 2 therein, providing for the disposal of the rear portion of the body in one line and the forward portion of the body in a line at right angle to said rear portion. In the rear end of the body is an aperture 3, preferably elongated and through which a supporting-staple A may be passed and driven into the door to which the hasp and hook is applied. When the hasp and hook is secured to the door by said staple, the rear portion of the body 1 occupies a vertical position, while the forward portion of said body occupies a horizontal position. The forward portion of the body 1 is bent at right angle to the horizontal portion of the body to provide a tongue 4, that is provided at the point of bending with notches 5, eX- tending inwardly from the sides of said tongue. When the tongue 4 is passed through a receiving-staple B, as shown in the drawings, the notch 5 at the outermost side of the tongue 4 receives the staple B, thereby producing an engagement between said members to prevent the accidental dislodgment of the hasp and hook from the receiving-staple when the device is used simply as a hook. A notch 5 is provided at each side of the tongue 4 for the purpose of rendering the device applicable to a door hung at either its right-hand or left-hand side. In the tongue 4 is an eye 6, that is adapted to receive the bow of a padlock, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. I, and through the medium of which the hasp and hook may be securely held to the receiving-staple, through which the tongue is passed.
1 I claim as my invention- 1. A combined hasp and hook consisting of a body and a hook portion; said hook por tion being bent at right angles to the body and being twisted to substantially a quarterturn, substantially as set forth.
2. A combined hasp and hook consisting of a body and a hook portion twisted into a plane at right angles to the axis of said body and provided with an aperture, substantially as set forth.
3. A combined hasp and hook consisting of a body, and a tongue said tongue being provided with a notch at each of its sides, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A combined hasp and hook consisting of a body, and a tongue; said tongue being provided with a notch at each of its sides and having an eye therein, substantially as set forth.
5. A combined hasp and hook consisting of a body having its forward portion twisted to a position at right angles to its rear portion, and having a tongue at its forward end bent at right angles to its forward portion and provided at each side with a notch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THEODORE E. OREOELIUS.
