To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. S. DIoKnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineralbluff, in the county of Fannin and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Locking-Bolt, of which the following is a specification.

It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved locking bolt for doors and similar structures, and the bolt of the present invention is designed as an improvement on the bolt shown in the Patent Number 931,735, issued to me on the 24th day of August, 1909. The bolt of the said patent consists, generally speaking, of an attaching plate having a single outstanding eye with which is designed to cooperate the bent intermediate portion of the bolt proper, mounted to slide on the said plate. It is intended that, in the bolt of the patent mentioned, the bail of a padlock be engaged through the eye whereby to prevent the bent portion of the bolt being swung up, which must be done before the bolt can be moved out of engagement with the keeper.

The invention contemplates improving this latch structure by providing an additional eye spaced from the original eye and adapted to be received in the bent portion of the bolt when the same is out of engagement with its keeper. This additional eye serves to retain the bolt against being accidentally shoved over to locking position and serves also as a support for the padlock when the same is not engaged in the original eye. Also, in the device of the patent, the bolt, even when in engagement with its keeper, is free to slide back and forth to a certain degree, but in the device of this application the bolt receives, in its bent portion, one of the eyes above referred to and engages at one side of its said portion against the other eye so that such play is positively prevented. The primary object in View, however, in providing two of the eyes is to enable the device to be used either as a right or a left hand bolt, an advantage not present in the patented structure mentioned.

In the accompanying drawings,Figure l is a perspective view of one form of bolt embodying the improvements of the present application. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view in detail through a. portion of the bolt shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing another form of bolt, and

Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a still further modification.

In the drawings, there is shown a portion of a door indicated by the reference character D and also a portion of the door frame, indicated by the reference character F. The form of bolt shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings includes an attaching plate 5 formed with a longitudinally extending slot 6 and having the material between the ends of the slot and the corresponding end edges of the plate stamped up, as at 7, to afford sleeves in which the bolt proper of the device is slidably mounted. This bolt is in the form of a length of rod material bent to afiord an intermediately located substantially U-shaped portion, indicated by the numeral 8 and also to afford portions 9, which latter portions are the ones slidably fitted in the guide sleeves 7. In forming the slot 6, portions of the material of the plate are left integral with the lower edge of the slot, and these portions are then struck over to project at right angles forwardly from the plate, and one of these portions is indicated in the drawings by the reference numeral 10 and the other by the reference numeral 11, each of the said portions being formed with an opening or eye 12 and in their edges which are presented toward the ends of the plate, each with a notch or recess 13.

It will be observed that the end edges of the sleeves 7 which oppose or are presented toward the adjacent eyes 10, are volute and that as a result, when the portion 8 of the bolt proper is swung down, whether the bolt be in engagement with its keeper or not, one side or arm of the said portion 8 will be guided into engagement in the recess 13 of one or the other of the eyes 10 or 11. The keeper above referred to is indicated by the reference numeral 15. It will be understood, of course, that the portion 8 of the bolt serves as a handle and when shifting the bolt into or out of engagement with its keeper 15 this said portion 8 is to be grasped and swung upwardly until out of engagement with that eye 10 or 11 with which it was originally engaged and after being so shifted, this said portion 8 is to be released and will drop into engagement with the other one of the said eyes and by engaging the bail of a padlock with this said eye, the portion 8 may be locked in engagement with the eye and held against further movement either unwarranted or accidental.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, eye-bolts 16 are employed in place of the stamped up eyes 10 and are engaged at their shanks through openings in the plate and engaged also through the door or other structure upon which the plate is mounted. These bolts may have nuts threaded upon them to hold them in place or may be clenched down inside of the door or other structure. In a like manner, the, sleeves 'Z are replaced by small screw eyes 17 through which the portions 9 of, the bolt. engage slidably.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, a structure similar to that shown in Fig. is provided except that the screw eyes 17 are replaced by struck-up ears l8 atthe ends of the device.

What is claimed is:

1.. In a device of the class described, an attaching plate, a bolt slidably mounted upon the plate and having an intermediate bend, and a plurality of eyes projecting from one face of the plate, either of said eyes being arranged to be received in the bend in the bolt.

2. In a device of the class described, an

1 attaching plate, a bolt slidably mounted upon the plate and having an intermediate bend, and a plurality of eyes projecting from i one face of the i bend of the bolt being movable to position to i receive one of the eyes and engage the other plate, the said intermediate eye.

3. In a device of the class described, an attaching plate, a bolt slidably mounted upon the plate, and a plurality of eyes pr0- jecting from one face of the plate, the said bolt having an intermediate bend and each of the eyes being formed with a notch presented toward the adjacent end of the plate and adapted to receive one or the other side of the bend of the bolt.
