Description

No. 639,843. Patnted Dec. 2s, I899. w, c. BELCHER.
SASH FASTENER.
(Application filed May 8, 1899.)
(No Model.)
' land, in the county of Ottawa and State of UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. BELCHER, OF HOLLAND, MICHIGAN.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,843, dated December 26, 1899. Application filed May 8, 1899. Serial No. 715,945. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM C. BELoHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hol- Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Sash-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic sash-locks, and more particularly to that class in which the sash is locked in either a raised, lowered, or intermediate position; and the object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, convenient, and effective device for this purpose.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved automatic sash-lock as it appears in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lock mechanism. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the window frame and sash. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the knob-spindle.
A denotes the window frame, and B the sash.
1 denotes a rubber socket fixed in a recess formed in the frame, and in which is mounted a spindle 2, the outer end of which is provided with a knob 3, the inner face of which is formed with a projecting lug 4, which engages a correspondingly-formed segmental recess 5 in the contiguous face of the rubber socket 1 to limit the play of the knob and spindle in either direction.
6 denotes a double-toothed pawl loosely mounted on the inner end of the spindle, which is provided with a transverse slot 1 at this point to receive a leaf-spring 7, the free ends of which engage the corresponding ends of the pawl.
The contiguous face of the side rail 1) of the sash B is formed with a longitudinal groove 6 to receive the notched rack 8, which projects into the path of the pawl.
The rubber socket 1 has sufficient grip or tension on the spindle to hold it and the spring and pawl in whichever position they may have been adjusted by the knob. As shown in Fig. 3, the knob is set to the left, which causes the spring to throw the upper end of the pawl into engagement with the rack 8, whereby the window may be raised and locked in position. When the knob is reversed or set to'the right, the upper end of the pawl is withdrawn and the lower end thrown into engagement with the rack, thereby locking the window when it is closed.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification. I
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
In a sash-lock, the combination with the notched or toothed rack 8, of the rubber socket 1, formed with the limiting-recess 5, the spindle 2 mounted in said socket and form ed with the transverse slot 1, the doubletoothed pawl 6 loosely mounted on said spindle, the leaf-spring 7 mounted in the spindle and coacting with the pawl, and the knob 3 fixed on the outer end of said spindle and formed with the lug 4, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit= nesses.
YVILLIAM C. BELCHER.
Witnesses: I
