No. 775,854. PATENTED NOV. 22, 1904 R. F. PINEGAR.
DOOR LATCH.
APPLICATION FILED FEB.1, 1904.

Pann err rent BUCH- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,854, dated November 22, 1904. Application filed February 1, 1904. Serial No, 191,566. No model.)
To all 10/110111 '17; may concern:
Be it known that I, Ronmrr F. PINneAn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakwood, in the county of Vernnlion'and State of Illinois, have invented certainncw and useful Improvements in Door-Latches, of which the.
following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in latches particularly adapted for use on sliding doors, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this class admitting of simultaneous opening of the door and disengagement of the latch.
The invention is ad vantageonsly used in connection with doors of closed vehicles Where it is desirable to utilize the same handle means for opening or closing the door and effecting the disengagement or unlocking thereof at the same time.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, inwhich the figure is a perspective view showing the construction of my latch.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the drawing by the same reference characters.
The invention when applied to one side of a sliding door only consists of the casing 1, the latch member 2, and the operating-handle 3. The latch 2 is pivoted at a point between its ends, as shown at4, and is adapted for looking engagement in a manner readily apparent. The outer end of the latch 2 is beveled, as at 5, in the usual manner and is provided with a notch 6 to engage the locking parts of the doorcasing. The spring? normally holds the latcl bar 2 in looking engagement, said spring being interposed between the upper portion of l the casing 1 and the latclrbar 6. To prevent disengagement of the spring 7 from the latchbar, the latter is provided with a lug 8, receiving one end of the coil-spring 7. handle 3 is pivoted to the casingl at its lower portion, as shown at 9, and is provided at its lower end with an integral angular extension 10, which cooperates with theinnerend of the latch-bar 2 to effect a rocking disengaging movement of the latch-bar when the handle is actuated. The extension 10 forms a tumbler adapted to engage the latch-bar, as above described. The casing 1 may be closed by a faceplate in the usual manner.
The latch-bar and operating-handle and the engaging extension, which is integrally formed with the handle, comprise two parts only of the device, and the body portions of the handle and the latch-bar are located in the same relative plane and are adapted for movement in the same relative plane. The structure of the two parts, as shown most clearly in the drawing, is exceedingly simple and maybe very cheaply produced as regards the cost of manufacture thereof. The tilting of the hand lo 3 is accomplished by pressure thereagainst, and'the said pressure forces the door open as well as disengaging thelatch-bar 2. The latch mechanism is very simply constructed and is adapted for broadapplication to sliding doors for the purposes before set forth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a latch device of the class described, the combination of a casing, a horizontally-disposedlatcl1-bar mounted in the casing and pi voted between its ends to the said casing, one of the ends of the latch-bar being extended without the casing and provided with a hook forming an engaging member, the opposite end of the latch-bar constituting an engaging portion, a handle extending through the upper portion of the casing and having its lower end extended rearwardly to form an integral engaging extension coc'iperating with the engaging portion of the latch-bar, a pivot-pin The Q disposed adjacent the engaging extension of I In testimony whereof I aflixiny signature in the handle and forming asupport for the said l presence of two Witnesses. handle, and aspring disposed between the up- ROBERT E PINEGAR [L' SE] per portlon oi: the casing and the latch-bar 5 adjacent the hook member thereof and nor- Vitnesses:
